| Abstract: | A conspicuous note on two Lucerne index cards compelled research into a Parisian family of antique dealers of Jewish descent and revealed the liquidation of their company by the National Socialists. The research also testified to Böhler’s efforts to do business in occupied France. The two closely interwoven strands of research ultimately revived the reflections on Böhler’s ambivalent role as an art dealer during the Nazi era. It can only be assumed that in addition to barter transactions and investments in French banks, other opportunities were also sought to acquire art in France at favourable prices and thus profit from the devaluation of the franc enforced by Nazi-Germany. The question ultimately raised as to how Böhler’s role as an art dealer in the National Socialist regime should be assessed cannot be answered conclusively here. Rather, this case study should serve to point out that such questions need to be investigated further. |
