| Abstract: | A business relationship had existed between the art dealers Goudstikker and Böhler since the early 1920s, which also included a series of paintings that were acquired jointly. The documents preserved in the Böhler archive and in the Goudstikker estate prove that after the German invasion of the Netherlands, the subsequent flight and the death of Jacques Goudstikker, the Kunsthandlung Julius Böhler now maintained business relations with the ‘aryanised’ art dealership and that even after the end of the World War, no attempts were made to reach an agreement with the Goudstikker’s widow regarding the joint art holdings before May 1940. On the contrary, there is evidence that works held by the Munich art dealer were sold to another art dealer and a private art collector during the Nazi era. In the case of at least one work of art that came to the Kunsthandlung Julius Böhler in the post war period, an attempt was made to erase the Goudstikker provenance by removing the Goudstikker gallery label. |
