Abstract:From 1920 onwards, Julius Böhler gradually acquired Paul Wolf’s collection of art and antiques. While Böhler registered some of these objects in the usual way by assigning each work a specific number, he chose a different approach for the majority of the Wolf collection. Most of the artworks were registered in 1934 under the number M_20-0942. In addition, each object was given a unique reference, presumably based on a system adopted by Wolf, which assigned each work a category (I–VIII) and a consecutive number (1–50). On this basis, around 200 works could be identified and the collection recon structed. The aim of this article is to decipher the complex relationships underlying the registration of Paul Wolf’s art collection.
