Abstract:The article examines the relationship between the Galerie Hugo Helbing, active primarily as an auction house, and the art dealership Julius Böhler. Based on an evaluation of the hand copies of the Helbing Gallery, the correspondence between Helbing and Böhler in the records of the Böhler archive in the Bavarian Economic Archives, and the data on the interaction of the two art market players contained in Böhler re:search, their business relationship is analysed in terms of interaction, cooperation and rivalry over time. Even if this approach allows us to highlight cooperative collaboration and (competitive) occupation of specific market segments, the fragmented nature of the source material does not enable us to draw more general conclusions. It is clear, however, that a critical assessment of data is as necessary as the regular critical assessment of traditional sources. The article argues that a prerequisite of future research is a transparent disclosure of the con tent and its gaps as well as a communication of the criteria and methods for transforming the historical source material into data structures.
