Abstract:The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and the Münchner Stadtmuseum have purchased objects from Julius Böhler that point to a previous owner by the name of "Leitner". Thanks to the Böhler Archive database and sources in the Bavarian Economic Archive, it was possible to clarify that there were two people with the last name Leitner who consigned objects from Vienna to Julius Böhler in Munich on the same day in December 1938. Böhler then mixed up these two Leitners, Rudolf and Richard. This case clearly shows how archival sources are tremendously helpful when researching possible cases of restitution in museums, but also how they need to be examined very carefully as well as discussed and finally assessed in dialog with colleagues and experts. Both museums have carried out extensive research into the Leitner family history, and the succession has not yet been clearly established.
