| Abstract: | Providing a succinct overview of how material evidence is processed and transformed into a genuine digital edition of the verbal and visual records, this introductory text seeks to reflect a few of the fundamental issues that need to be addressed: what is the relation between a given document and the context from which it is derived? What is recorded, what is not recorded, and why? Recounting the evolution of the project and its funding, the article also explores broader notions of digital publishing, research data infra structures, and the specific responsibilities that come along with the public unfolding of both simple transactions and of intricate processes of dispossession. |
