Summary The international scientific conference titled “There and (Some times) Back: Migrations and Identity in Upper Silesia” took place in Katowice on October 20-21, 2022. The organizer of the con ference was Silesian Freedom and Solidarity Centre (ŚCWiS) in Katowice. Representing Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Dr. An drzej Michalczyk authored the text: “To Congress Poland and to America: The First Migrations from Upper Silesia in the 19th Century”. The researcher referred to the earliest migrations of Upper Silesians who left for the New World in search of better living conditions. David Skrabania, representing the Oberschle sisches Landesmuseum in Ratingen, described the fate of Upper Silesians who ended up in the Ruhr region. The article is titled “Around Migration from Upper Silesia to Westphalia at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries”. While the first two presenta tions focused on economically motivated migration movements, the next article in the volume, titled “From Poland to Germany and Vice Versa: Intra-Upper Silesian Migrations after 1922” au thored by Dr. Mirosław Węcki from the University of Silesia in Katowice, refers to border changes after World War 1 and the forced departures of residents from the discussed historical region. These departures were triggered by the rebirth of the Polish state and the establishment of the Polish-German border in the Upper Silesia area. Another global conflict - the Second World War - had an immensely strong impact on the fate of the Upper Silesians. The topic is further addressed in the next four articles. The first of
them, authored by Dr. Dariusz Węgrzyn,
346 Summary an employee of the Silesian Freedom and Solidarity Centre (ŚCWiS), is titled “Deportations of Civilian Population from Upper Silesia for Forced Labor in the USSR in 1945 - A Migra tion Exception?”. It focuses on the deportation of approximately 46,000 men who were sent to Soviet labor camps as so-called “living reparations” in the early months of 1945. These men were compelled to work there, with the worst-case scenario lasting until the turn of 1949/1950. In his article titled “Around Narra tives of the Expulsion of the German Population from the Sile sian Voivodeship, 1945-1949” Dr. Bernard Linek, an employee of the Silesian Institute in Opole, addresses another significant issue. The article delves into the post-World War 11 reordering of Europe, which resulted in some Upper Silesians being recog nized as Germans by the Polish authorities due to border chang es. Consequently, they were compelled to leave for the then-oc cupied Germany. In their place, people often arrived who had also been expelled from their homes, namely the Kresowiacy, who also became victims of border changes. Dr. Bogusław Tracz, from the Historical Research Office of the Institute of National Remembrance (1PN) in Katowice, provides a synthetic perspec tive on the topic in his article titled “From Eastern Borderlands to Upper Silesia: Migration Dynamics and Integration Challeng es”. Population changes, along with a significant deficit of quali fied labor, in the region crucial for Poland s reconstruction - sup plying coal and steel - namely Upper Silesia, prompted actions by
central authorities. As a result, efforts were made to bring back Polish workers from France and Belgium, who were to con tribute to the Silesian mines and steelworks. Zbigniew Gołasz, an employee of the Museum in Gliwice, writes about this in the article “From France to Silesia. Post-war re-emigration and its problems. A contribution to the issue”. The next three papers refer to the post-war period and the complicated migration history of Upper Silesia. This block be gins the article by Dr. hab. Adam Dziuba, an employee of the Historical Research Office of the Institute of National Remem-
Summary brance in Katowice, titled “Ensure industrial workers. Econom ic and demographic conditions of mass migration movements in the Silesian/Katowice province in the years 1945-1989”. This text describes how the region ‘absorbed’ ever new groups of residents from other areas of Poland, who found employment in the constantly developing heavy and mining industry, but also replaced those residents of the region who decided to leave for Western Europe, most often to the Federal Republic of Germa ny. The arrival of such large groups of people from outside the region, and the infrastructural investments necessary for them to live and work here, had a huge impact not only on the image of Upper Silesia, but also on its identity. The director of Silesian Freedom and Solidarity Centre, Robert Ciupa, refers to this is sue in his article “Migrations in mining during the PRL - on the example of the ‘Nine’ miners from the ‘Wujek’ mine”. Dr. Sebas tian Rosenbaum, an employee of the Historical Research Office of the Institute of National Remembrance in Katowice, address es the fate of those who left for the Federal Republic of Germa ny in his article “Through the Iron Curtain: Migrations from Upper Silesia to the FRG 1956-1989”. The author of the text not only focuses on indicating what motivated these people to leave their hometowns, but also describes the dynamics of departures, as this migratory movement accelerated or slowed down, and the source of this fluctuation were political factors. The last voice in this block belongs to Dr. Justyna Kijonka, representing the University
of Silesia, the author of the article “Around the identity of migrants from Upper Silesia in the Federal Repub lic of Germany”. After the earlier descriptions by historians, it’s time for the voice of a sociologist, introducing a completely dif ferent dimension to the narrative about Upper Silesian migra tions. Based on interviews conducted with people who left the region, we can try to delve into the very delicate sphere of these people’s identities. This text also partly tries to show how the people of Upper Silesia tried to find themselves in a new reality, whether they regretted their departure or not. 347
348 Summary The last block of the conference and post-conference publi cation focuses on quite specific departures from Poland. It con cerns the activists of the “Solidarity” Trade Union, who, after the introduction of martial law and the repression they encoun tered, were often forced to leave the country, and were even en couraged to do so by the communist authorities. From a nation wide perspective, this phenomenon is being synthesized by Dr. Grzegorz Wołk, an employee of the Historical Research Office of the Institute of National Remembrance in Warsaw, in the article “‘Forced’ emigration after the introduction of martial law - na tionwide conditions”. The same topic, but in a regional, Upper Silesian context, is taken up by Dr. Jarosław Neja, an employee of the Historical Research Office of the Institute of National Re membrance in Katowice, in the text “Forced emigration from the Katowice province after December 13,1981. A few remarks on the conditions, course and effects of the MSW departure action in the Silesian-Dąbrowa region”. The volume concludes with an article by Karol Chwastek, an employee of the Silesian Freedom and Solidarity Centre, titled “Departures to the West of‘Solidar ity’ activists from the Silesian-Dąbrowa Region in the eighties based on witness accounts”. |
