Zusammenfassung: | We tend to think of sixteenth-century European artistic theory as separate from the artworks displayed in the non-European sections of museums. Alessandra Russo argues otherwise. Instead of considering the European experience of "New World" artifacts and materials through the lenses of "curiosity" and "exoticism," Russo asks a different question: What impact have these works had on the way we currently think about-and theorize-the arts?Centering her study on a vast corpus of early modern textual and visual sources, Russo contends that the subtlety and inventiveness of the myriad of American, Asian, and African creations that were pillaged, exchanged, and often eventually destroyed in the context of Iberian colonization-including sculpture, painting, metalwork, mosaic, carving, architecture, and masonry-actually challenged and revolutionized sixteenth-century European definitions of what art is and what it means to be human. In this way, artifacts coming from outside Europe between 1400 and 1600 played a definitive role in what are considered distinctively European transformations: the redefinition of the frontier between the "mechanical" and the "liberal" arts and a new conception of the figure of the artist.Original and convincing, A New Antiquity is a pathbreaking study that disrupts existing conceptions of Renaissance art and early modern humanity. It will be required reading for art historians specializing in the Renaissance, scholars of Iberian and Latin American cultures and global studies, and anyone interested in anthropology and aesthetics |

spelling | Russo, Alessandra 1972- Verfasser (DE-588)138799563 aut A new antiquity art and humanity as universal, 1400-1600 Alessandra Russo University Park, PA The Pennsylvania State University Press [2024] 2024 1 Online-Ressource (288 Seiten) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier We tend to think of sixteenth-century European artistic theory as separate from the artworks displayed in the non-European sections of museums. It will be required reading for art historians specializing in the Renaissance, scholars of Iberian and Latin American cultures and global studies, and anyone interested in anthropology and aesthetics Geschichte 1400-1600 gnd rswk-swf ART / History / Renaissance bisacsh Art Philosophy Indian art Appreciation Europe History 16th century Indian art Appreciation Europe History To 1500 Ästhetik (DE-588)4000626-8 gnd rswk-swf Indigenes Volk (DE-588)4187207-1 gnd rswk-swf Kolonialismus (DE-588)4073624-6 gnd rswk-swf Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 gnd rswk-swf Kulturkontakt (DE-588)4033569-0 gnd rswk-swf Kunst (DE-588)4114333-4 gnd rswk-swf Kunsthandwerk (DE-588)4073883-8 gnd rswk-swf Südamerika (DE-588)4078014-4 gnd rswk-swf Asien (DE-588)4003217-6 gnd rswk-swf Afrika (DE-588)4000695-5 gnd rswk-swf Neuspanien (DE-588)4041919-8 gnd rswk-swf Afrika (DE-588)4000695-5 g Asien (DE-588)4003217-6 g Südamerika (DE-588)4078014-4 g Kolonialismus (DE-588)4073624-6 s Kunst (DE-588)4114333-4 s Kunsthandwerk (DE-588)4073883-8 s Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 s Ästhetik (DE-588)4000626-8 s Geschichte 1400-1600 z DE-604 Neuspanien (DE-588)4041919-8 g Indigenes Volk (DE-588)4187207-1 s Kulturkontakt (DE-588)4033569-0 s Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-0-271-09569-1 https://doi.org/10.1515/9780271098142?locatt=mode:legacy Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
