En ce milieu du XIXe siècle, le tout puissant capitaine Vandel mène son détachement de soldats français à la conquête du désert. Au prétexte de civiliser un peuple, Vandel sort alors de ses gonds et se livre à des extravagances démoniaques que rien ne peut réfréner.. Le Temps des crocodiles est un livre hors- normes, à la fois poétique et politique.
