143 ABSTRACT 'This book is not quite like publishing the results L of an extensive rescue archeology project. You can even say that the authors tried to get away from this genre. On the one hand, we, the members of the group of authors, undoubtedly felt like “newcamers” invading foreign lands, and tried to show as much interested po liteness as possible. On the other hand, over many years of work in central Russia, we have developed a certain algorithm of complex research, which we tried to ap ply in the new territory. We were lucky to be in the ar ea where the foundations of European archeology were formed. After all, the famous burial ground near the village. Dolkaim (the modern settlement of Kovrovo), on the basis of which O. Tyshler developed the scale of chronology of antiquities of the Roman time and the Migration era, was only a few kilometers from Kuliko vo, where our main work was carried out. The German heritage, cultural and scientific, is still visibly and in visibly felt in the Kaliningrad region, despite all efforts from officials to get rid of it. We can say that the place “reforges” its new residents, whose parents came from different parts of Russia. Therefore, in the book there are two “extremes” or two reference points that limit the interval - everything else in between. These refer ence points: I) a description of the natural landscape, microtoponymy, or an attempt to scientifically describe the mysterious “place” that determines the “location”; 2) a record of the oral heritage of the current inhabitants of old German settlements. In an effort to
pay tribute to our scientific predeces sors, we have included in the book translations of key works by C. Engel and H. Crome. In addition to the ex cavations and exploration of settlements in the Kulikovo region, as well as data from the archive of H. Sommer. This is all the more important because we continued in the most direct way their field research. Our pits are a continuation of the trenches of the 1930s. Comprehensive studies using modern methods could not “fit” into the strict framework of construc tion projects. It was important to study the microregion as a whole. Unfortunately, it only partially worked out. The results of paleosoil, spore-pollen and archaeologi cal-landscape studies presented in the book, as well as the experience of serial radiocarbon dating can be con sidered as a sample, the degree of representativeness of which will become clear in the future. During 2010, stationary excavations explored five rural-type settlements (villages Kulikovo 8, 8A, 8B, 8V), located in close proximity to each other and containing ceramic and clothing complexes of two periods - VIIIXI and XII - early XV centuries . AD Exploration work 2011-13 added four more settlements to this list of stud ied sites, which can be pre-dated, starting from the IIIII centuries. AD and ending with the XI century. (Ku likovo 2, 2A, Kulikovo 9A, Kulikovo 8D). Two of the studied settlements (Kulikovo 2 and Kulikovo 2A) can be quite confidently associated in terms of the time of existence with the burial grounds of the migration epoch located nearby, 300 m west of the settlement. The
iden tification of such a complex is a major achievement for the micro-regional archeology of Sambia. In 2016, largescale works were carried out at the village of Shumnoye 6, which, judging by the nature of the collection of ce ramics and finds, is very close to the early period of habi tation of the villages of Kulikovo 8 and 8A. The pres ence on its area of traces of an earlier settlement of the era of Roman influence and a synchronous ground burial ground Shumnoe 4, located nearby on the area of the for mer Eisliethen estate, was established. The life activity at the late site of the Kulikovo 8A settlement took place in the Early Order, and the ruins of this settlement probably gave rise to the German new settlers-colonists to name this place as “Preussische Ro chels” studied in the course of work. With regard to the confinement of the monuments located in the alignment of the Primorskoe highway to the landscape situation, it should be said that they are generally located on the area of the tract of type 3, ac cording to V.A. Nizovtsev (moraine plains are flat and gently sloping, slowly drained). Two main monuments (Kulikovo 8 and 8A) are located not far from the con tact of this landscape type with another - lacustrine-gla cial basins are flat and gently concave, in river valleys, drained by rivers and gullies, i.e. relatively close to the bed of an unnamed stream. The settlements of Kulikovo 8B and V are entirely located within the boundaries of the moraine plain. The same should be said about the villages of Kulikovo 5-6. The settlements Kulikovo 2, 2 A, 2B
and Kulikovo 12 are strictly confined to the bank of an unnamed stream. In the interfluve of the Aleika and Zabava rivers (an area of approximately 6x4 km), 50 rural-type settle-

Already in the VIfl-X centuries, the territory was devel oped so densely that a kind of “cellular” system of set tlements began to form, independent of natural sources of water supply (they began to build wells) - instead of a more archaic linear settlement system of the eras of Roman influence and migration, when settlements lined up along or around natural sources water supply. This process has a character similar to the process that is observed in Western European archeology and is called literally “Fly to the hills” and which took place in the history of medieval Russia a little later, starting from the XIV-XV centuries. Such a progressive settle ment system made it possible to develop the largest pos sible areas for agricultural land, and above all for arable land. Obviously, this process was quite intensive due to the relative overpopulation of the peninsula. The degree of saturation of the territory with archaeological monu ments of that time became distinctly clear when carrying out continuous work along the opened route of the Primorskoye Highway under construction from Roshchino / Grünhoff to Pionersk / Neukuhren. Settlements were found both on the slopes to streams and rivers, and on watersheds - i.e. where they are rarely sought after in conventional archaeological exploration. The abundance of identified archaeological sites is partly due to the fact that the roure of the road,
which requires maximum horizontality without ascents and de scents, runs approximately along the conditional hori zontal 20-21 meters above the sea. This horizontal is the marker of the boundaries of the ledges of the stud ied landscape - a moraine flat plain, evenly, but clearly pronounced ledges rising from the coast inward of the peninsula, to the tops of karne hills 40-60 meters above sea level. Near the edge of this horizontal and located at a distance of about 100-300 m from each other, most of the investigated settlements. There are some data that make it possible to “de tail” the peaks and recessions of the process of residen tial and economic development of the territory. It is so obvious that in Roman times (the first centuries of the Common Era) the region was densely populated, signifi cant areas were cleared of forests and plowed up. This is especially typical for the valley of the Aleika River. At the same time, stratigraphic observations were made showing that the activation of deluvial processes, the filling of depressions with soil washed away from the higher levels, took place in the 6th-7th centuries. AD This is confirmed by the identical dates obtained in the bottom part of the slope deposits near the settlements of Kuliko vo 8D - 1360 ± 70 BP (GIN-14639) and Geroiskoe 3 1380 ± 60 BP (Ki-1280). Some spatial displacement of economic activity can be traced. Thus, using the example of paleosol works in the Aleika valley, it was established that the areas where there was economic activity in Ro man times were later overgrown with forests.
Paleobotanical studies of samples of sections and a series of samples from pits (including from two wells) showed that it was in the second half of the 1st millenni um AD there was a radical restructuring of the landscape cover: forests were reduced to arable land and meadows. The settlements and settlements of the Prussians were surrounded by an open landscape with an insignificant participation of forest vegetation. It is important to emphasize that in the conditionally “Prussian time”, starting from the 6th century AD, the development of new spaces takes place, which is proved by the excavations of the villages of Kulikovo 8, 8A D. At the same time, the materials at our disposal do not give a clear answer to the question on the degree of con tinuity of antiquities (and population) of the first half of the 1 st millennium AD. and a later period. For the second half of the 1st millennium AD two centers can be distinguished in the studied microregion Kulikovo - Rornanovo - Shumnoye. They are marked by the presence of settlements and large burial grounds. The first pair - the settlement of Heroeskoye and the burial ground Aleika 7. The second pair - the settlement and the burial grounds of Kulikovo. Moreover, the first center on the river. Aleike looks “main” (by the presence of expensive items in the burial ground, and by the na ture of the fortification of the settlement, the intensity of its cultural layer) and more ancient. Against this back ground, the gold “ring from Strobjenen” does not look foreign. It could well be at the disposal of the elite of the microregion
in question. Another question is, why did it end up at the foot of the northern slope of Mount Vysokaya? So far, you can only speculate: an accidental loss, a buried treasure, a place of worship, etc. It is possible that at the end of the 1st millennium AD the microregion has experienced “stress”. Many set tlements with stucco “Prussian” ceramics end their ex istence precisely at this time. The materials of the exca vations testify to the fact that the settlements Shumnoye 6, Kulikovo 8 and the early buildings of the settlement Kulikovo 8A were abandoned in the X-XI centuries. Settlements with circular ceramics from the beginning of the 2nd millennium AD appear either in a new place, or with a displacement in space relative to earlier ones (buildings of the late stage of the life of the village of Kulikovo 8A). In the XIII-XIV centuries. On the village of Kulik ovo 8A, a nobil may have lived for a short time, with the estate of which such finds as the tip of a sword scabbard and a spur with plating with white metal may be associ ated. Judging by the dates of the well (pit 60) and the finds from it, the nobil’s estate was abandoned in the XIV century. At the beginning of the 2nd millennium A.D. The “center of gravity” of the microregion is shifting west ward to the valley of the Zabava River. Rornanovo set tlements 1 and 2 are located here. The finds of silver coins of the 13th century are very indicative, on the
ABSTRACT site of Romanovo 2 (Divens). Nearby, the center of the Pobetten parish was formed. In the XV century, a complete restructuring of the settlement structure of the microregion took place. The complex of finds associated with the 14th-century No bile estate, recorded in an excavation at the village of Kulikovo 8, may have had some connection with the vil lage of Porruckeln, first mentioned in 1336. The next small settlement (inn) in the immediate vicinity of the settlements dates back to the 17th- 18th centuries. An important, but still preliminary, conclusion is the absence of any significant settlements adjoining the ramparts of the fortifications. That is, these fortified set tlements were not places of concentration of the popula tion, but at the same time, they probably played the role of administrative and military centers. For the first time in the archeology of East Prussia, serial radiocarbon dating of settlement complexes was used. As a result, reliable bases were obtained for the development of the chronology of mass material, first of all, ceramics of the 5th - 14th centuries, and wells of various types were also dated. It has been established that wells with wooden walls, apparently, are slightly earlier than wells with a lining of boulders. Wells appeared probably no later than the 7th - 9th centuries. It can be noted that the Sambia wells are not typical of the box-shaped structure of planks, which is typical for northern Germany and Poland. In Sambia, stone structures of wells appear very early, no later than the 9th century, judging by the data
from the village of Kulikovo 8. For northern Germany and Poland, similar structures are characteristic of the 12th - 13th centuries. That is, it is very likely that Sam bia developed its own tradition of building wells. The change in ceramics of the late Roman period and the era of migration by molded, unfinished, rough pottery of simple pot-shaped forms with abundant grit in the dough dates back to the turn of the 6th-7th centuries, and the change from molded to circular ceramics took place about 1000 radiocarbon years ago. In terms of cal endar years, taking into account the calibration, this is the middle - the second half of the 11th century. The 145 perception of the new tradition of pottery production was evidently influenced by the neighboring southern and southwestern Slavic cultures. Osteological data, despite the small number of col lections, indicate the presence of three main types of do mestic animals on the farm - horses, cattle and pigs. The number and species diversity of bones of wild animals has been decreasing throughout the 1st millennium AD. Common Prussian settlements of the 8th - 10th cen turies excavated over a large area. Shumnoe 6, Kulikovo 8 and Kulikovo 8A in terms of the size and number of possible residential properties are approximately close to the “standard” of Prussian villages of 12-16 yards, as V.T. Pashuto based on the analysis of the text of the trea ties of the XIII century. (Pashuto, 1959). The most difficult monument to interpret is the golden ring (bracelet) from Strobjehnen (present-day Kulikovo). We did not manage to break
through the veil of secrecy that still surrounds this thing, which is now stored in the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. Pushkin in Moscow. It was not possible to determine the chemical composition of the metal from which it was cast, and to conduct a technological study of the decoration at the modern level. However, the analysis carried out by S.A. Salrnin on old sketches, allowed to substantiate a new hypothesis about the semantics of images. The essence of this hypothesis is that the images on the ring refer to the Germanic epic legend, which took shape at the turn of the Merovingian and Carolingian eras. This is very important, as it shows the interaction of the cultural tra ditions of the Prussian and Germanic at the stage of the formation of the culture of the Prussians of Sambia in the second half of the 1st millennium AD. And this is exactly the topic that should become the pivotal one in the further study of the region. The book ends with an essay by German colleagues Heidemarie Eilbracht, Timo Ibsen, Sebastian Krish and Yaroslav Prassolov on archaeological sites within the study area between the river. Aleika and Zabava, which were studied by German archaeologists before 1945. The essay introduces into scientific circulation the archi val materials that miraculously survived during the war.
