337 SUMMARY Valenta, Petr: Richard Dotzauer and Personalities ofBusiness Life of the 19th Century This book examines several stories of businessmen of the 19th century. Major atten tion is paid to an outstanding personality of the Prague business world, Richard Dotzauer. In parallel, there are also profiles ofJindřich Fügner and Andreas Haase. A detailed approach to the historical personality enabled to state exceptional fe atures and to find agreements in usual schemes of business careers. In terms of geography, the research focused especially on the Prague environment, taking into account the central economic and social involvement of the main protagonist of the study in the Czech metropolis. One of the initial ideas of the study is the statement that in order to present a comprehensive image of a business personality one also has to examine other fields of activities than the business itself. Taking this into account, there was the choice of the methodology of the study. The approach through the acquisition of various forms of capital seemed to be the right instrument to watch the ascendancy, stabilisation or fall in the career. In this, the study was inspired by a part of the theories of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. It was the combination of various forms of capital that ensured the corresponding extent of social influence and the associated power. They could be used by an entrepreneur to influence partly not only the economic development in a certain locality, but also to enter wider social processes. On account of this, the study explored, as the central
background of Dotzauer’s career, not only economic transformation, that can be summarised under the notion of advancing capitalist economy and industrialisation, but also the shaping of modern civil society that opened up the previously closed spheres of social achievement. The examples of all three examined entrepreneurs have pointed out the im portance played by the institution of family in the creation of business careers. It was a basic unit within which there was a continual transfer of economic and also social capital that eased the establishment of a young entrepreneur. Thanks to marriage policy, there could be also connection to the traditional social links of the Prague business society or the remoter business environment of European port towns. The ability to reflect new business models and technologies as well as complementation of the business portfolio by new products was another precon dition of a successful business career. The study examined the differing successful ness of the construction of trade routes in the direction of London and Hamburg (Dotzauer) in comparison with a less efficient alternative of trade with the Adriatic
338 SUMMARY port in Trieste (Fügner). It was equally important to recognise the suitable entry to the new spheres of business such as banking and insurance and opportune transition to the shareholding model of capital structure of a business. However, the social esteem of Dotzauer and other entrepreneurs was prima rily built in the institutions with a wider social reach. As early as the 1850s, he tried to develop public commitment within the permitted opportunities in the Industrial Union. The era of the early 1860s then fully opened up the opportunity to participate and help to shape the revived life of civil society. Its development brought about not only the chances to occupy social and political posts, but also the necessity to adopt a position to a wide spectrum of competing social and po litical concepts. This was primarily the problem of rivalry of national movements. Along with other prominent Prague German entrepreneurs, Dotzauer perceived the successes of the Czech national movement. This was connected not only with a threat to the commanding positions in the business world, but it also brought about the ability of the Czech side to occupy posts in influential institutions, such as the Prague City Hall. The intensity of the efforts with which Dotzauer struggled to preserve German influence in the city was extraordinary. This included a contri bution to organising the creation of associations as well as their generous financial sponsoring. Casino struggled to be the umbrella institution of the Prague German community. In order to maintain its dominance in the
Prague business circles, a vital role was played by his activity in the Prague Chamber of Commerce. Along with being an influential organisation, it was also a symbol of prominent positions of German society in the Prague trade world. At the moment of his significant entry in the public life, Dotzauer’s reputation crossed the bounds of the business circles and also resonated in the German, but also Czech national society. In this respect, a comparison with other entrepreneurs is eloquent. Andreas Haase was a personality whose economic background and business fame stood even higher than in Dotzauer’s case. This was also reflected by Haase’s influence in professional institutions dating back to the time before the March 1848 Revolution. However, Haase did not intensively join the activities associated with a national movement, whether Czech or German. In this, there was for him the barrier of social distance from the activities seeking the inclusion of broader population groups, a mental distance from the accentuation of modern nationalism and his emphasis on Austrian identity in combination with land pa triotism. As a result, he did not use the mobilisation and emancipation influence of the modern national movement. At the moments when his reputation had to be verified, e.g. by gaining a mandate in the elections to the Diet or a munici pal committee, this reality surfaced. For this reason, his influence was also dimi nishing when a new overall situation was created in Austria after i860. By contrast, Fügner s example shows how an absolute engagement for the support of

339 society was reflected in the acceptance of a personality regardless of the success or failure of a discontinuous business career. On the other hand, Dotzauer’s ability to sponsor a great variety of associa tions, even those in which he did not have the leading post, is a guide explain ing his prestige in the broad strata of German society. By supporting academic and physical education organisations, he built up his reputation, for example, in the circle of younger and often more radical members of the German commu nity. The invested means and time then returned in the form of social leader ship of German society which was constituted by liberal burghers concentrated around Casino. Analogously, a broad support heading for the Ore Mountains area created a precondition for Dotzauer’s appreciation in the whole society of this area. His name made its mark in the memory of the region for decades. Dotzauer’s symbolic capital was also verified at the time of elections to local, professional and land institutions. The study explored Dotzauer’s strong influence on the organisation and support of election campaigns, be it for the election to trade chambers or the Bohemian Diet. In order to achieve a comprehensive picture, the study focused on an insight in the entrepreneur’s mentality and lifestyle. In relation to the shaping of his po litical profile, the loyalty to the liberal credo appears to be a major component of Dotzauer’s personality. Political liberalism was an ideal arrangement of the politi cal constitution, to which the monarchy came closer after 1867, when the
fight for overall wealth was to be enforced through constitutional institutions. In Dotzauer’s eyes, all rival forces that constituted opponents of the liberal, centralistic project were merged into a single whole of antimodern, clerical and feudal barriers on the road to the values of progress, rationalism and constitutionalisation. This gener ated a misunderstanding and overlooking of Czech national emancipation. Given the more important tasks taken up by liberalism, it seemed to Dotzauer that it is anachronic if he wanted to implement his programme concepts. The identification with the liberal concept allowed the inclusion of members of the Prague Jewish community, who were among Dotzauer’s business partners, into the ranks of his fellow combatants in the German liberal party. This cooperation then collectively lessened the pressure to integrate anti-Semitic slogans that became a part of the German völkisch movement, whose popularity was gaining strength in the lower strata of German society. The loyalty to political liberalism did not mean adherence to the free mar ket principle in economic affairs. The example of liberalisation of customs policy shows how the liberal business sphere insisted on a stronger regulation than that projected by the civil service bureaucracy. The study has highlighted the importance of entrepreneurs in the shaping of modern civil society. Above all, this was the support to the foundation of associ ations or active role in the institutions which became one of the symbols of the
340 SUMMARY gradual widening of public space. The associations sponsored by Dotzauer were founded with a view to supporting German society in Prague and Bohemia. It was equally important that by means of control of similar associations, the existing leading forces in society were struggling to preserve their influence on the control of national society. With his activities, Dotzauer thus contributed to ethnic con frontation at least within Prague. Despite this, thanks to the encouragement for public activities, Dotzauer helped to make increasingly broad strata of society join public affairs and with it, a gradual removal of social barriers. Ideologically, similar efforts were interconnected with the values of liberal society such as freedom, law, constitutionality, education or hard work. Given Dotzauer’s career of a self-made man, his calling for individual responsibility for one’s own fate sounded authen tically and it served as a model when shaping the social climate and value codes. It was just a small fragment in the process filled by many parallel and conflicting interactions.
