SUMMARY HUGO VAVREČKÄ’S WAR. MICROHISTORY FROM THE THRESHOLD OF CONTEMPORARY HISTORY (1945-1952) This monograph analyses the final years in the life of Hugo Vavrečka (1880-1952), a journalist, diplomat, and sales director of the Baťa company. The study belongs to the genre of microhistory and histori cal biography, and it draws its theoretical inspirations primarily from the works of Carlo Ginzburg, Sigurôur Gylfi Magnusson, and Hans Renders. The first theoretical and methodological chapter called Microhistory of Contemporary History presents the author’s epistemological position, methodology, and research questions. They can be simply summarized into one: How did a former member of the social and business elite adapt to the new socio-political situation, in which he, after many years, had suddenly lost the ability to choose his own fate? Although the work’s focus is put primarily on the years 1945-1952, the monograph offers a broader context, and in the second chapter, Hugo Vavrečka: Journalist, Diplomat and Director (1880-1944), it intro duces readers to the early years of his life. Hugo Vavrečka was born on February 22,1880, in Silesian Ostrava. His father worked in the mining industry and his mother was a home maker. Vavrečka also had an older sister, Božena. They both grew up in a Catholic environment where they were led to Czech patriotism. After high school, Vavrečka did not plan on staying in Ostrava and working in the same industry as his father. He went on to study me chanical and electrical engineering in Brno instead. After his gradua tion, however, he did
not continue on his technical career path - after a year of service in the Austro-Hungarian Navy, he started working as a journalist. He also published short tales; his best-known story is called Frantisek Lelíček in the service of Sherlock Holmes, which became very popular, among other things, because it parodied the monarchy,
230 which had been continuously losing public support. At the same time, Vavrečka became orphaned because his mother, father, and his sister along with her family died. His efforts to become independent both personally and professionally gained a new motivation then because nothing was tying him to Ostrava anymore and he suddenly not only wanted to but also had to act independently. Vavrečka quickly established himself among journalists and oth er important figures in Brno (e.g., future President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk). At the same time, he got married, and when his first daugh ter Božena was born (1913), he was working as a reporter on the Bul garian-Turkish battlefield during the Balkan Wars (1912-1913). In the following years, he spent most of his time away from home as he was sent to Trieste during World War I, where he soon started cooperat ing with Maffia, the main element of Czech underground resistance, in which he held a prominent position. After WWI, he joined the Czechoslovak delegation to the Paris Peace Conference and later took part in the emerging diplomatic ser vices of the newly formed Czechoslovakia. Vavrečka spent 12 years in diplomacy, first in Hamburg, Budapest, and finally in Vienna, where his family - wife Josefa, daughter Božena and his son Ivan (born in 1915) - finally lived together with him. Nevertheless, Vavrečka still maintained at least some independ ence: he entered diplomacy with his own strategy, which he wanted to enforce (close economic cooperation in Central Europe), and he was disappointed when he did not find support on domestic
political soil. At the same time, his position as a civil servant kept his hands tied: he could not speak freely in public or engage in private businesses. For many years, he maintained contact with Tomáš Baťa, the founder, owner, and director of the Baťa Company, who had repeatedly offered him a job. In 1932, Vavrečka finally accepted his offer. Shortly after he joined the company, Tomáš Baťa tragically died, but Vavrečka stayed - perhaps out of loyalty to his old friend and his company - as a sales director until the end of World War II. He helped the company overcome the Great Depression, transform its business in foreign markets and increase production. In the 1930s, he became significantly involved in Hospodářské ústředí, cooperating with other important industry leaders. In 1938, he held the position of Minister of Propaganda for several months during the so-called Munich Crisis. Later he took part in negotiating the company’s strategy against the Nazis and subsequently became involved in supporting the resistance.
SUMMARY 231 The last months of WWII along with survival strategies are an alysed in the chapter End of the War or “faire le mort” (1944-1945), which shows how Vavrečka entered the first post-war weeks with great expectations. He wanted to stay in the company; he also pre dicted great success for his family. His son-in-law Václav Μ. Havel along with his brother Miloš had been running the Lucerna Palace and Terraces family businesses as well as the influential Barrandov Studios in Prague-Barrandov for many years. Vavrečka was also very optimistic about his grandchildren Václav and Ivan Havel, who were brought up to continue the family business and the family’s intel lectual tradition. This collision between Vavrečka’s ideas and expectations and the post-war reality is the focus of the following chapter, the Third Czecho slovak Republic in the Old-New Conditions (1945-1947). At the same time Vavrečka was expecting to continue his pre-war activities, a new gen eration of younger communists, who took over the Baťa company soon after WWII, was being formed. The main justification was the accusation of the “old leadership” of collaborating with the Nazis. In the first weeks following the war, Vavrečka’s former colleagues were investigated because of their war activities, but he himself was not. He met with the company’s new chief executive, Ivan Holý, with a pro posal on his further activities in the company, and waited for an an swer. In the meantime, he started contributing to newspapers again. In his articles, he focused primarily on the economy and trade with the West
and the East - two parts of the future bipolar world, which he had not seen this way yet. When several months had passed without an answer, Vavrečka decided to leave the company without giving up any of his rights, e.g., his life-long rent, which was promised to him in his contract from 1941. It was probably this assertiveness that forced the communists, who controlled the Baťa company, to launch their first public attacks on Vavrečka for collaborating with the Nazis during the war. In 1946, both of the above-mentioned continued. Vavrečka’s in vestigation was initiated, he was interrogated for several days, and a criminal complaint was subsequently filed against him on suspicion of collaboration. However, Vavrečka did not doubt his innocence or the Czechoslovak justice system (at least in this case) and he soon responded by suing the Baťa company himself. He based his argu ment on his contract, which allowed him to expect several privileges even after his leave, which the company did not keep.
232 A year later, both cases developed in Vavrečka’s favour. Although his case was referred to the National Court, the indictment was even tually dropped by a decision of the Czechoslovak government. Only Vavrečka’s former colleague Dominik Čipera was tried, but he was acquitted. Furthermore, his and the company’s actions during the war were called a “positive example of their social class”. In Vavrečka’s case against the company, the lawyers of both par ties began to raise the issue of a settlement. Although Vavrečka in sisted on his demands, he was willing to negotiate the amount itself. The company’s lawyer recommended doing the same. The position of Ivan Holý, however, became significantly stronger in the meantime because in 1946 he became one of the communist members of the Parliament. At the beginning of 1948, Holý rejected the settlement, pointing out that his lawyer would wait for “how the overall situation develops”, knowing very well about the escalation of disputes between communists and democrats, as well as about the growing influence of the USSR in Czechoslovakia. Immediately after the February communist coup, Vavrečka’s posi tion flipped, which is analysed in the chapter fittingly called the Post February Turnover (1948). First, the Havel family lost their business, although Václav Μ. Havel was allowed to stay at the Lucerna Palace as an advisor. Meanwhile, Vavrečka decided to withdraw his lawsuit because he no longer had a chance to succeed. However, the Baťa company tried to reopen the proceedings against the former directors for collaboration with the
Nazis, and thus against Vavrečka. Despite a lack of interest from the leaders of the Communist Party, Ivan Holý and his allies in the Parliament were finally successful and Vavrečka was tried in December 1948. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison, had all of his property seized, and lost his civil honours for 2 years. Because it was not possible to appeal this judgment, Vavrečka started off 1949 by requesting a presidential pardon from the then President Klement Gottwald. Vavrečka’s skill of negotiation fully showed in this crucial text, as shown in the last chapter, The Last Act (1949-1952). Although he could not formally submit an appeal, he pointed out the fact that the basic principle of the participant’s right to a fair trial had not been met: Vavrečka was not informed of the court session, could not attend it or prepare his defence. This allowed him to file this request. In addition, he skillfully used his social capital and his negotiating skills. Throughout his life, he had been building a network of friends and acquaintances, transcending most political
SUMMARY 233 parties and loyalties, who could help him if necessary, and at the same time, he had the talent to adapt his statement according to who it was intended for and the values the counterparty probably held. Vavrečka usually did not shift the meaning, but he tried to present his version in such a way that it resonated positively with the recipient. Although his case was internally declared a miscarriage of justice, it was not officially remedied, because newly established communist leaders could not publicly support a member of a former “bourgeoi sie elite”. However, Gottwald privately decided that while Vavrečka would not be pardoned, he would be allowed to postpone serving his sentence for health reasons. Therefore, from 1949 on, Vavrečka’s life was characterized both by submitting requests for deferral to tend to his health problems preventing him from serving his sentence and by striving to remain at least somehow intellectually active. Neverthe less, he did not lose faith in a successful ending. The family believed that the February political changes would not last long, and Vavrečka did not doubt that his grandchildren would soon be able to build on the family’s business or see other successes, due to which he tried to educate them with the help of his daughter Božena from a young age. He taught them e.g., mathematics, physics, and foreign languages be cause the ability to communicate with the world was crucial for him. In the early 1950s, it was not only Vavrečka, the Havel family, and other members of the former political and business elite, who had to
face problems. Paradoxically, Ivan Holý, the first director of the Baťa company after 1945, had to deal with a rapid decline in his political power when he became a part of an internal political and justice pro cess. On that occasion, it was revealed that it was not Vavrečka, but Holý, who collaborated with the Nazis as a confidential informer of the Gestapo and Sicherheitsdienst during WWII. However, this had no direct influence on Vavrečka’s case. Hugo Vavrečka died on August 9,1952, from a heart attack, which he suffered in the middle of teaching his grandchildren German.
