adam_text | JOHN UPDIKE The 1980s found novelist John Updike at the peak of his powers. Roger’s Version (1986), a reimagining of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, explores Updike’s recurring themes of the tension between faith and reason and the pull of sexual desire, as well as the cosmic impheations of contem porary scientific breakthroughs. Roger Lambert, a middle-aged divinity professor, finds himself approached by Dale Kohler, an enthusiastic graduate student in computer science, who claims that recent technical advances in computing can establish the existence of God “as a fact.” In con versation, the two men grapple with fundamental questions of theology and philosophy—but their interests and passions are not confined to the mind and spirit. In a tour-de-force refashioning of the love triangle at the heart of Hawthorne’s classic tale, each man becomes involved in an extramarital affair. As the twin adulteries unfold, the novel moves searchingly among spiritual and social concerns, and Updike, taking an urban setting evocative of Boston and Cambridge, highlights with characteristic sharp ness of observation the contrasts and cruelties of Ronald Reagan’s America. Widely hailed upon publication as a masterpiece, awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, Rabbit at Rest (1990) is the cap stone of Updike’s most acclaimed series of novels, his “surpassingly eloquent elegy for his country,” in the words of Joyce Carol Oates. The outwardly comfort able and complacent Harry Angstrom, now in his mid-fifties, has settled into leisured obsolescence,
dividing his time between Pennsylvania and the Valhalla Village retirement community in Florida. But alongside his golfing, junk-food consumption, and other forms of ease loom insistent shadows of Rabbit’s human fragility and mortality. He is forced to confront his failings as a father when he discovers that his son is embezzling money from his car dealership
to support а сосаніе habit, and a heart attack threatens to draw to an unceremonious close the saga of “an American citizen who,” in Updike’s own characteri zation, “shares the national passion for youth, free dom, and sex, the national openness and willingness to learn, the national habit of improvisation.” An appendix to the volume collects five essays and speeches containing Updike’s typically shrewd and judicious assessments of these novels and the Rabbit tetralogy more broadly, as well as observations on the nature of fiction.
