SUMMARY The title of the book Antika i mi(t) is difficult to translate into English, because it is based on a word pun. It might be read either as antiquity and us (mi), or in another version as antiquity and myth (mit). As stated in the subtitle, it questions dominant traditions of classical reception, i.e. of the ways in which antiquity and ancient myths were transmitted and re shaped throughout history. The book discusses various ways in which we come across ancient myths, antiquity, or narratives about it. It goes about reception of antiquity in different spheres of life - everyday re ality, sports, literature, theatre, comics, theory and philosophy, and as such, methodologically it enters the fields of classical reception studies and, inevitably of anthropology of ancient worlds. In everyday life, antiquity is actually everywhere. Only at home, I have just come across the cream called Bioderma, the wine Felix’s blood, the shampoo by Aphrodite cosmetics and Ajax cleaning product. Exactly such a presence of antiquity in trademarks is discussed in the first section „Antiquity around us“. One of the conclusions is that antiquity and its usage in the domain of marketing lies in the long tradition of constructing the power of antiquity as European glorified past. The second chapter of this section „Was sport ever only sport?“ focuses on the invention of modern Olympic games and all discrepancies and myths about its connection with ancient Greek Olym pic competitions. The questioning of the claims of continuity between ancient and modern games reveals important aspect of
ideological instrumentalization of antiquity. 149
Lada Stevanovič · Antika i mi(t) The second section has a title „Antigone’s rebellions“ and is divided into three main chapters. The first, discusses reception of Antigone in philosophical tradition ֊ from Hegel, to Kier kegaard, concluding with Judith Butler. These examples of re ception in philosophy open another domain in which ancient myths are still present. Discussing the relation and reading of antiquity and ancient myths in certain periods, contexts and philosophies, reveal often more about the discussed philosop hers and their time, than about antiquity; The issue that comes up as an important in this chapter is the position of women - both in everyday life, in western philosophical tradition, as well as in arts and myth, revealing the long existence of pa triarchy, but also pointing to existing niches through which women could express their position and influence. Two chap ters that follow, put Antigone in theatre and in comics, both being examples of different usage of ancient myth with the po litical potential of raising important social questions. The third section „Womens inscription“ is devoted to two novels by women authors and about female mythical prota gonists. The first is Medea. Voices (1996) by Krista Wolf, and the second one is Penelopiad (2005) by Margaret Atwood. In both novels, the authors make intervention into famous myths, changing the perspective of the stories and giving the voice to their heroines. Bot novels raise a question not only about fe male repression in the long mythical tradition, but also about the space that the myth opens
to challenge tradition that su pports existing patriarchal mechanisms. This brings us to the fourth section that is devoted to „An cient myth and theory“. The first chapter discusses the presen ce of ancient myth in psychoanalysis and its influence on the overall huge impact that Freuds Oedipus theory had on the reception of the famous myth, creating practically new myth in which many people still believe. The following chapter moves to feminist theories and researches how myths may be used creatively. Very important for these examples of reception is absence of essentialism and the awareness that myths and their meanings are never fixed, that they may be redefined, retold 150
and rearranged. Exactly through these changes and inscripti ons, it is possible to raise interesting and important social que stions. Finally, the third chapter offers the view into the possi ble anthropological research of gender in myths. The final section makes a shift in the research perspective. It is not any Inore focused on reception, but rather on conti nuities. The chapter discusses black humor and the changes of this phenomenon through the time, following on one hand literary tradition and on the other hand, the ritual practices, both in Serbia and in ancient Greece. 151
