Abstract: | "Mendl Mann's autobiographical novel The Fall of Berlin tells the painful yet compelling story of life as a Jewish soldier in the Red Army. Menakhem Isaacovich is a Polish Jew who, after fleeing the Nazis, finds refuge in the USSR. The novel follows Menakhem as he fights on the front line in Stalin's Red Army against Hitler and the Nazis who are destroying his homeland of Poland and exterminating the Jews. Menakhem encounters anti-Semitism on various occasions throughout the narrative, and struggles to comprehend how seemingly normal people could hold such appalling views. As Mann writes, it is odd that "vicious, insidious anti-Semitism could reside in a person with elevated feelings, an average person, a decent person". The Fall of Berlin is both a striking and timely look at the struggle that many Jewish soldiers faced. Skillfully translated from Yiddish and introduced by Maurice Wolfthal, this is an affecting and unique book which eloquently explores a variety of themes - anti-Semitism, patriotism, Stalinism and life as a Jewish soldier in the Second World War. The Fall of Berlin is essential reading for anyone interested in the Yiddish language, Jewish history, and the history of World War II."--Provided by publisher |

The Fall of Berlin is essential reading for anyone interested in the Yiddish language, Jewish history, and the history of World War II."--Provided by publisher</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Sowjetunion</subfield><subfield code="b">Raboče-Krestʹjanskaja Krasnaja Armija</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)130443-4</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Geschichte 1945</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Juden</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4028808-0</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Russlandfeldzug</subfield><subfield code="g">1941-1945</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4076906-9</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Soldat</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4055409-0</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Berlin, Battle of, Berlin, Germany, 1945 / Fiction</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Germany / Berlin</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="1"><subfield code="a">Mann, Mendel / 1916-1975 / Fiction</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Soviet Union / Raboche-Krestʹi͡anskai͡a Krasnai͡a Armii͡a / Fiction</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Yiddish fiction / Translations into English</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Jewish soldiers / Soviet Union / Fiction</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Antisemitism / Soviet Union / Fiction</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) / Poland / Fiction</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Berlin, Battle of, Berlin, Germany, 1945 / Fiction</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">1945</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">1939-1945</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Fiction</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Personal narratives / Jewish</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Yiddish fiction</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Autobiographical fiction</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4003939-0</subfield><subfield code="a">Autobiografie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd-content</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="0">(DE-588)1071854844</subfield><subfield code="a">Fiktionale Darstellung</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd-content</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Sowjetunion</subfield><subfield code="b">Raboče-Krestʹjanskaja Krasnaja Armija</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)130443-4</subfield><subfield code="D">b</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="1"><subfield code="a">Juden</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4028808-0</subfield><subfield code="D">s</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Soldat</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4055409-0</subfield><subfield code="D">s</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="3"><subfield code="a">Russlandfeldzug</subfield><subfield code="g">1941-1945</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4076906-9</subfield><subfield code="D">s</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Geschichte 1945</subfield><subfield code="A">z</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="5">DE-604</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Wolfthal, Maurice</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)1170915345</subfield><subfield code="4">trl</subfield><subfield code="4">win</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Erscheint auch als</subfield><subfield code="n">Online-Ausgabe</subfield><subfield code="z">978-1-80064-079-5</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="2"><subfield code="m">Digitalisierung BSB München -
