| Abstract: | "Architecture remains a strongly authorised practice, in the sense that the author-figure remains very much alive, and also that the legitimisation and authority to speak about buildings is still attached to architect-author figures. Architects are often at pains to shape and protect their legacy, to dictate how their work and persona will be written into history. All of this makes the use of oral history methods in architecture a uniquely complex proposition: the architectural subject breathes closely down the historian’s neck. Oral history seems to have the potential to act as a corrective or counterpoint to more canonical and conventional modes of architectural history. Yet the risk of using oral history in architecture is that the method may simply amplify existing mythologies – of genius, intention and singular authorship. This chapter reflects on the complexities of using the method of oral history, and its conventions and norms and conceptual frames, within the discipline of architecture. " |
