Beschreibung:The book deals with words borrowed, proving the existence of cultural contacts across borders of countries and languages, i.e. those that were not inherited by a given language from its evolutionary ancestor - e.g. Polish to Slavonic - but were taken over from other languages during its historical development . Therefore, he analyzes words whose foreign pedigree is still visible to a non-specialist, and not such as beetroot, work and soup, which as a result of centuries of use have lost their features of strangeness and whose foreign origin - Latin, Czech and German respectively - the average user of Polish does not realizes. The book combines the linguistic and psycholinguistic approach, thanks to which it provides new answers to old questions and new arguments in the discussion on the perception and adaptation of borrowings. Among these questions are the following: What are the reasons for borrowing words from foreign languages and what factors shape the way these words are learned? Why do many borrowings persist in language despite the criticism they face? Are there any loans you don't need? Can a foreign word always be replaced by its native synonym and is the spelling of that word indifferent to its meaning? How to measure the semantic similarity of foreign words and their native equivalents? Should borrowings be fought for the sake of clarity of language? The answers given by the authors are based on the results of a research project from 2012–2016, funded by the National Science Center (DEC-2011/03 / B / HS2 / 02279). In this project - bearing the acronymic but significant name APPROVAL (from Adaptation, Perception and Reception of Verbal Loans) - researchers dealt with the adaptation of foreign words in Polish and Czech
