At times it will seem that, especially in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, there was scarcely a personage of note in politics, the law, public administration, newspaper publishing, or literature who did not issue a challenge or who was not “called out ’. Some of the more ardent duellists racked up participation in an astonishing number of duels, either as principal (duellist) or as second. Many do not figure among the great and good of history but may have enjoyed some local celebrity and commanded a few column inches in local publications or in court records. However, prime ministers, presidents, Cabinet ministers, lawyers, accountants, generals, colonels, landowners, clergymen, roués, gamblers, counts, earls, dukes, writers, artists and even some sovereigns made their appearance at dawn on the field of honour to “blaze away , in the Irish expression.’
