Antonio Panaino The River of Fire and the River of Molten Metal - A Historico-Theological Rafting Through the Rapids of the Christian and Mazdean Apokatastatic Falls This book is dedicated to the Mazdean theological representation of the end of historical time. While the subject is usually treated in the framework of the category of apocalypticism, scholarly debate has rarely dealt with the more appropriate theme of the apokatastasis (the complete regeneration of the world with the annihilation of Hell and the salvation of the whole humanity). The doctrine of Ohrmazd s universal mercy was an innovation in the religious scenario of ancient İran, but its connections with some Christian theologies of Late Antiquity still need to be investigated within a comparativ e analy sis of the Iranian motif of the river of molten metal ՜, which will purify the w icked ones and destroy Hell. Antonio Panaino, born in 1961. is professor of Iranian Studies at the University of Bologna with special interests for philology, history of religions in Pre-lslamic Iran and history of ancient sciences (in particular astronomy, astral lore and astrology). In the framework of his career, he has analysed various aspects of the Mazdean mythology and its theological tradition with increasing attention for the intercultural phenomena especially those occurring between Byzantium and Sasanian Iran, dealing also with different matters such as ancient diplomacy, sacred royal ideology, and cultural interferences or mutual influences between East and West. He has published a number of monographic works
(also in the Series of the Austrian Academy of Sciences), and many articles in the most prominent Academic periodicals of this area of research.
