Abstract: | Welcome to the SIAM International Conference on Data Mining (SDM 2008), being held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Atlanta. This conference is the eighth in the SIAM series of conferences on data mining. This series has provided a venue for researchers to present their work in data mining in a peer-reviewed forum. It also provides an ideal setting for graduate students and other newcomers to the field to learn about cutting-edge research through outstanding invited lectures and tutorials. An exciting set of focused workshops are also being held on the last day of the conference. The SIAM conference series has traditionally focused on the theory, algorithms, and application of data mining in the context of datasets in science, engineering, biomedicine, and the social sciences. These datasets challenge our ability to analyze them due to their size and complexity. Sophisticated, high-performance, and principled analysis methodologies, as well as algorithms based on sound theoretical and statistical foundations, are often required to mine these types of datasets. Appropriate levels of abstraction that allow end-users to exploit these sophisticated techniques and understand clearly both the constraints and the interpretation of results remain as some of the most challenging and important open issues in the field. The centerpiece of our conference this year is a series of four keynote lectures by Ronald Coifman from Yale University, Andrew Moore from Google, Dianne O'Leary from the University of Maryland College Park, and Krishna Rajan from Iowa State University. In addition to a strong technical program of contributed papers, there will be a set of interesting tutorials that are an integral part of the program, as well as workshops that allow an even deeper focus on sub-areas that are of great interest to the community. This year we continue a popular feature - the poster session and reception that will follow a "poster" plenary session in which poster authors will be able to make short presentations highlighting their work. Finally, as part of our theme of focusing on the region where the conference is being held, the Georgia Institute of Technology and partnering academic institutions have arranged a special invited session with speakers from the local universities. They will host a special reception on Friday where local data mining research activities will be highlighted in a poster session format. We would like to thank the entire organizing committee for the excellent job they have done putting together a strong technical program. We especially thank Mohammed Zaki and Ke Wang for recruiting the program committee, guiding the submitted papers through the review process, and making the final decisions. |
