Zusammenfassung: | Virgil's fourth Eclogue is one of the most quoted, adapted and discussed works of classical literature. This study traces the fortunes of Eclogue 4 in the literature and art of the Italian Renaissance. It sheds new light on some of the most canonical works of Western art and literature, as well as introducing a large number of other, lesser-known items, some of which have not appeared in print since their original publication, while others are extant only in manuscript. Individual chapters are devoted to the uses made of the fourth Eclogue in the political panegyric of Medici Florence, the Venetian Republic and the Renaissance papacy, and to religious appropriations of the Virgilian text in the genres of epic and pastoral poetry. The book also investigates the appearance of quotations from the poem in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century fresco cycles representing the prophetic Sibyls in Italian churches |

The book also investigates the appearance of quotations from the poem in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century fresco cycles representing the prophetic Sibyls in Italian churches Virgil / Bucolica / 4 Virgil / Influence Vergilius Maro, Publius v70-v19 Bucolica 4 (DE-588)4280219-2 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1420-1600 gnd rswk-swf Renaissance / Italy Renaissance (DE-588)4049450-0 gnd rswk-swf Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 gnd rswk-swf Kunst (DE-588)4114333-4 gnd rswk-swf Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 gnd rswk-swf Italy / Civilization / Roman influences Italien (DE-588)4027833-5 gnd rswk-swf Vergilii Ecloga IV (DE-2581)TH000003281 gbd Renaissance, Rezeption (DE-2581)TH000005253 gbd Italien, Rezeption (DE-2581)TH000005524 gbd Vergilius poeta (DE-2581)TH000003263 gbd Vergilius Maro, Publius v70-v19 Bucolica 4 (DE-588)4280219-2 u Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 s Italien (DE-588)4027833-5 g Renaissance (DE-588)4049450-0 s Kunst (DE-588)4114333-4 s Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 s Geschichte 1420-1600 z DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-1-108-49992-7 https://doi.org/10.1017/9781108582094 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
