Medieval Philosophy is the fourth in the series of books based on the popular History ofPhilosophy podcast. In this volume Peter Adamson examines the riches of philosophy in medieval Latin Christendom, from the Carolingian Age to the dawn of the Renaissance. He offers a wide-ranging, detailed, and engaging introduction to the philosophical figures and movements of the period. While there is extensive coverage in the book of more famous thinkers like Anselm, Abelard, Aquinas, Seotus, and Ockham, the ‘without any gaps’ ethos of the series is fulfilled by looking at many authors and topics that are rarely covered in surveys of medieval philosophy. This includes the contribution of women authors like Catherine of Siena, Hildegard of Bingen, and Marguerite Porete; scholastic groups such as the Victorines, the speculative grammarians, and the Oxford Calculators; mystical texts and writers like Meister Eckhart and the Cloud of Unknowing; and philosophically resonant literature such as the Romance ofthe Rose, Dante’s Divine Comedy, and Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Many philosophical topics are covered along the way, such as the problem of divine foreknowledge, proofs of God’s existence, human free will, knowledge and its relation to language, the soul and its afterlife, the sources of ethical obligation, gender and sexuality, political legitimacy, economics, just war theory, and skepticism. Some attention is also paid to developments in medieval science and mathematics. All of this material is placed within its historical context and the book is structured to convey a sense of how
medieval philosophy developed over time.
