adam_text | From cell phones and computers, to tablets and television, we swim in a tech nological world. New media provides the backdrop for most of our day-to-day encounters, including chatting with our friends, making our appointments, and posting updates about our lives on social media platforms. Yet we rarely stop to think about how new media has revolutionized the ways in which we interact with one another—and simply live our lives—in the twenty-first century. In New Media and Society, Deana A. Rohlinger examines how new media shapes our interactions, experiences, and institutions, changing our relationships with friends, families, and ourselves. Drawing on case studies and in-class exer cises, she challenges readers to think about the consequences of these changes, which have typically had both a positive and negative impact. Each chapter engages a different topic—including education, religion, law, work, and politics— and assesses how new media alters our worlds as well as our expectations and experiences. Rohlinger provides critical social insights into the many fascinating technologies that—for better or worse—continue to shape our everyday lives.
