adam_text | Singularity and Existential Communication
Summary
Author: dr. Uros Milic
The goal of the presented work, titled Singularity and
Existential Communication, is to explore the hermeneu-
tical relation between the singular and the universal
through a schematic account of Soren Kierkegaard’s
thought and its influence on the German philosopher
Martin Heidegger as well as the philosopher and psyc-
hiatrist Karl Jaspers. As a point of departure for our
investigation, we chose to focus on the ethical impli-
cations of Kierkegaard’s understanding of communi-
cation, which, in its existential perspective, includes
both direct and indirect communication or, put more
precisely, importation. Direct or immediate communi-
cation represents an immediate bond between the
singular and the universal. Relying on immediacy ser-
ves as Kierkegaard’s indication of a historically media-
ted view of religious importation. It belongs to the
history of the human race and a universally acclaimed
actuality [ Virkelighed]of the world-historical. Howe-
ver, it also belongs to that whichs is most inward to
the individual, i.e. the immediate [Umiddelbarhecf] pos-
sibility of becoming a singular or rather an authentic in-
dividual. Existential categories such as faith, choice,
therefore represent the historically mediated intelec-
tual concepts, as well as existential conditions for aut-
hentic existence. Baring this view in mind, indirect
communication serves as an indication of the situation,
in which the individual is always exposed to a loss of
immediacy: a lack, error, a misunderstanding. Indirect
communication thereby serves as an indication of exi-

stential crisis, manifested as mood, that is to say a si-
tuation, in which an existential rift between the singu-
lar and the universal takes place. In this view, the
situation denotes a deviation of the individual within
the universal, a crisis, which entails a search for one’s
position within the world. In Kierkegaard’s constelation,
moods such as anxiety, despair, melancholy, boredom,
depression generally express an occasion for the loss
of one’s world, a separation. In his psychologically orien-
tating works such as Repetition, The Concept of Anxiety
and The Sickness Unto Death, Kierkegaard accordingly
distances himself from a scientific discourse in which
continuity of thought represents the dominating orien-
tation, and moves closer to the aspect of discontinuity,
expressed by mood. Refering to one’s mood also re-
presents Kierkegaard’s maieutical way of upbuilding
the individual toward renewing communication with
an-other. It represents the very turn which enables ac-
tuality — the orienting turn toward actuality.
The immediacy of the individual is thus topical, wit-
hin the world-historical, actual, and yet outside of it,
atopical, exceptional. The ethical status of immediacy,
as well as the actuality of the world-historical, is thus
preserved in uncertainty, suspense, doubt, ambiguity.
The same applies to the ontological perspective of
Kierkegaard’s aesthetical thought. Instead of providing
a system, Kierkegaard reveals an aesthetically projec-
ted topology of existence, in which the ethical position
of authenticity remains in transition, polemic and at the
reader’s disposal. The central point of our investigation
that aided us in the development of our methodology
is the polemical nature of Kierkegaard’s exceptional
thought. Namely, the ambiguity created by the lack of
a system does not promote a reduction ad absurdum,
433
but a turn in relation to authority. Kierkegaard as an
author forms his ethical directive by creating conflict
between various domains of scientific thought, and
thus preserves it in motion. The same applies to his
own authority. Kierkegaard methodically rotates aut-
hority within his authorial production and by doing so
keeps the origin of his production unwarranted. We fo-
cused on Repetition as a primary source for understan-
ding Kierkegaard’s atopical thought, both in relation to
his own works as well as in relation to the history of
philosophical thought. Departing from Repetition, we
argued for a topology of existence, from which we en-
tered into a detailed investigation of The Concept of
Anxiety and The Sickness Unto Death. From that point
on we entered into discourse with Kierkegaard’s le-
gacy. Maintaining the notion that Kierkegaard’s
thought represents a polemical topology enabled us to
undertake a critical survey of its reception in existen-
tialism, by attending to its various representatives such
asJean-Paul Sartre, Gabriel Marcel, Simone de Beau-
voir and Albert Camus. However, the main focus of
our attention fell on Heidegger’s and Jaspers’ recep-
tion of Kierkegaard’s thought. In this part of the dis-
cussion we used the Danish author as a figure of
discord between the two authors. Focusing our atten-
tion on the discord between them enabled us to per-
form a methodical turn toward the enigmatic figure
that is Soren Aabye Kierkegaard. The lack of a onto-
logical system thus aided us in developing the notion
of disontology, where error, plurality, difference and
lastly, communication, come to full fruition.
