| adam_text | This volume of the Cambridge Edition of the Works of
F. Seott Fitzgerald is a variorum edition of The Great
Gcztsby (1925), the author’s masterpiece. This is the
eighteenth and final volume in the series, bringing to a
close an editorial project that began more than thirty
years ago.
The variorum text is based on multiple witnesses: the
extant holograph of the novel and Fitzgerald’s revised
galley proofs; the first edition and later impressions
from the first-edition plates; and subsequent editions,
sub-editions, and impressions of the novel issued by
American, British, and Canadian publishers. A further
source is Fitzgerald’s personal copy of the novel, which
bears corrections and revisions in bis hand.
Editors and publishers began attempting to improve
the text of T/te Gr-eat Gcctsby shortly after the
author’s death in 1940. There are many instances of
over-correction in later editions of the novel; there
are numerous examples of textual corruption. The
variorum clears away this deterioration and gives
control of the text back to Fitzgerald.
Minimal emendation has been necessary: the changes
should be likened to the stabilization, cleaning, and
restoration of a work of art that has deteriorated over
time, not to a full-scale intervention that alters the
nature of that work.
This variorum edition stands as a work of summation.
It includes an introduction, tracing the history
of the novel, and an emended text. Emendation
tables, Fitzgerald’s 1935 introduction, and fourteen
illustrations appear in the back matter. Historical
annotations provide identifications of persons, places,
events, popular songs, and literary works -- all now
made available to readers, teachers, critics, and
scholars.
