BYZANTINE SPHRAGISTICS IN THE CRIMEA
The article is a historiographic summary of the study of Byzantine seals in the Crimea. The study
of sphragistic evidence can be crucial for the understanding of the peninsula’s medieval history.
The information provided by the seals often fills in the existing lacunae, corrects initial theories or poses
new questions, so few contemporary studies of the medieval Crimea can afford to ignore the sphragistic
materials. The article analyses the seals without a definitely localised finding place but containing toponymic
data in their legends that connects them to the Crimea (mostly Cherson), which are currently in different
collections all over the world. Another important constituent part of the corpus of Crimean seals are the
molybdobullae which do not contain any Crimean geographic names in their legends but were found there.
This group includes the finds made in Cherson, Sudak, Kerch, Partenit, Mangup, etc.

A RARE IMAGE OF THE VIRGIN WITH SELECTED SAINTS
ON SEALS IN THE HERMITAGE COLLECTION
The article analyses a rare image showing the Virgin with Selected Saints which occurs on Hermitage
seals. Molybdobullae usually tend to depict the Virgin alone, but multifigured scenes are found as well.
The image from the Hermitage collection portrays the Virgin with SS Nicholas, Andrew, Demetrios and
Marcianos. The article discusses the seals of John Hagiophlorites (between 1166 and 1177), Theodore,
metropolitan of Patras (twelfth century); Michael Kutziniadites, proedros (eleventh century); John,
archbishop of Thessalonica (tenth century) and others.

REPRESENTATIVES OF THE EHI TON O’lKIAKDN BUREAU IN THE CHERSON
ADMINISTRATION: A NEW LATE-NINTH-CENTURY SEAL
OF KYROS OF CHERSON
The molybdobullae of the imperial spatharios Michael provide us with a wonderful opportunity
to follow the meandering career path of a Cherson official and clarify certain details relating to the
organisation of the administration in Cherson at the early stage of the Byzantine theme in Taurica.

The seals make it possible to understand that the title of kyros did not disappear when archontia
of Cherson was terminated but was preserved as part of administration of strategos of Cherson until
at least the last third of the ninth century. With time, Michael relinquished his position of kyros and
became ‘the first one, a proteuon of Cherson. The fact that in both cases, the seals contain the term
¿7ri tcov oiiaaKCOv prompts us to see our owner as a representative of the corresponding metropolitan
office who managed the property of the fiscus and the imperial domain in the provinces. This,
in turn, is a clear evidence of the inclusion of Taunca in the range of imperial domains.

BYZANTINE SEALS FROM TAMAN
(NEW FINDS)
The study considers eleven new Byzantine molybdobullae discovered in 2014—2015 in the sea under
the Taman site. The seals belong to representatives of the imperial bureaucracy, Theme administration
and private individuals of the ninth — eleventh centuries. Alongside Cherson and Sudak, these finds are
an additional demonstration of the importance of Matarkha as a trade and mihtary-administrative hub
of the Crimean / Taman region.

THE THEME OF SUGDAIA IN THE ELEVENTH CENTURY
All that was known about the theme of Sugdaia until recently was that it existed in 1059 and
was united with the theme of Cherson under command of patrikios and strategos Leo Abates (an
inscription on a cornice from Cherson). Sigillographic evidence discovered under water in the Sugdaia
port has prompted certain adjustments to the existing ideas about the city’s history. Among them are
seals of hitherto unknown stragetoi of Sugdaia: protospatharios and strategos Georgios Mousele,
patrikios and strategos John, dated to the mid-eleventh century. This means that the theme was
not eliminated in 1059 by becoming a part of the united theme of Cherson, since such cases were
extraordinary events which meant simply that mihtary functions (mihtary commandment) of the
themes were consobdated in the hands of a single commander. It is worth noting that John, strategos
of Sugdaia, and Leo Abates, stratigos of the united theme, had equal rank of patrikios. The existence
of the theme in the second half of the eleventh century is also confirmed by the find made in Sugdaia
of four out of seven known seals of Oleg-Michael, the ruler of Tmutarakan, figuring as the archon of
Matarkha, Zichia and all Khazaria (1083—1094) and the seal of his predecessor David Igorevich who
was archon of Russia and ruled Tmutarakan in 1081—1083. It teUs that although the Cherson archives
are rich, not a single Old Russian seal from this period, including any seals of Tmutarakan Princes,
has been found in it so far. The Princes were in correspondence with the Byzantine administration
of Sugdaia but not Cherson. As a result, we may assume that the theme of Sugdaia continued to exist
until at least the 1090s.

THE KEY PROBLEMS OF CRIMEAN NUMISMATICS IN THE BYZANTINE PERIOD
The article draws the conclusion of many years of recording of new coin finds and clarifying the
attribution of those published earlier. The monitoring of monetary circulation in the Crimea has made
it possible to identify key problems which ought to attract the attention over the course of further work
aimed at the interpretation of the role and place of Byzantine coins and their imitations over different
historical periods and in different regions of the peninsula.

THE CHERSON COINS UNDER JUSTIN I (THE VICTOR / VICTORIA AVGGGE TYPE):
A DIE-BASED ANALYSIS AND PICTORIAL STYLISTICS
The article states the beginning of the minting of pentanummii in Cherson during the reign of Justin
I, identifies the total number of coin dies, establishes the sequence of their operation and reconstructs
the chain of interrelations between the dies leading on to the reign of Justinian I. It also suggests
a dating for the issue of pentanummii of Justin I and Justinian I with the legend reading on the reverse:
VICTORIA AVGGGE. The stylistic analysis of the dies has made it possible to identify professional
contacts between Cherson and Nicomedia in the early sixth century.

A COIN-TYPE MEDALLION WITH APOTROPAION FUNCTIONS
The article focuses on a gold double-sided medallion of the coin type. On the obverse it contains
an image of the head of a bearded man in profile, on the reverse, a pattern imitating the Arabic script,
and the Greek letter ‘delta5, a letter which supposedly possessed magical functions which symbolised an
indivisible obstacle, and more specifically, a door. Both sides of the medallion, as well as the cylindrical
perimeter, feature four-end crosses of various configurations: straight and slanted. The comparison
to variously dated Byzantine artefacts owned by both Orthodox Christians and members of other
denominations of the Christian Church, serves as the foundation for the supposition that we are
faced with a coin-type medallion with functions of an amulet, which may have been widespread in the
eleventh — twelfth centuries among the non-Orthodox Christian communities of Asia Minor.

THE CHERSON FOLLES AND HALF FOLLES OF SERIES ONE (TVf + TC)
Rare and unusual Byzantine folles with denomination CM5 and half folles with TC minted
in Chersonesos under Justin II (565—578) have been investigated. Those coins differ from the traditional
current imperial issues mainly by two standing figures on the obverse and additional to the denomination

SUMMARIES
mark one standing figure on the reverse. Altogether twenty-eight folles and twenty half folles were
collected from museums, private collections and internet resources. Dies analysis of plaster copies
and photos allowed to recognise seven obverse dies and thirteen reverse dies among folles. For each
obverse from one to four reverses were determined and probably only one case (R3) of simultaneous
usage of one reverse by two obverses. Less abundant half folles showed four obverse and nine reverse
dies among twenty studied coins. The usage of one reverse die (R2) by two obverses has to be proved
by discovering new qualitative specimens. In general, many half folles have a rather weak condition while
folles look much better. Typological and metrological analysis allowed to support the dominant among
investigators opinion on the primary appearance of this series among Chersonese-Byzantine folles.
It could be noted between others accurate preparation of blank coins, high quality of images on obverse
and reverse with a lot of details of clothing and precise legend. The coins have a large size and are
rather heavy in comparison with other series of the Chersonesos issue. It is important to underline the
big variety of discovered obverse and reverse dies in contrast with a low number of known specimens
making up this series of extreme rarity. It was suggested, the rarity of this certain issue of Chersonesos
folles with ‘M’ and half folles with eK’ was determined by artificial extraction of the coins from the city
market probably into the favour of the last and most abundant series of this type.

THE CHERSONESOS HOARD OF KUFIC DIRHAMS FOUND
IN THE EARLY 1820s
The paper deals with a hoard of Kufic dirhams from the Crimea found in the early nineteenth century.
Drawing on the data from two of C. M. Fraehns’ publications, the author reconstructs the list of coins.
The composition of the hoard is as follows: Umayyad (two dirhams), Aghlabid (one dirham from Ifriqiya,
187 AH), Early Abbasid (seven dirhams), Middle Abbasid (nine dirhams). T. p. q. is 256 AH.

THE ITALIAN WORLD OF THE NORTH BLACK SEA COAST
IN THE THIRTEENTH - FIFTEENTH CENTURIES IN THE LIGHT
OF NUMISMATIC EVIDENCE
In uncovering the numismatic aspect of the ties between Italy and the North Black Sea Coast
in the thirteenth — fifteenth centuries, the author was guided by the conclusions reached by the
scholar A. L. Ponomarev, namely that the evolution of medieval coinage was the consequence of the
establishment of the worldwide economic system and the result of operation of public financial flows.
The study of archaeological finds of Venetian and Genoese coins and their imitations along the
North Black Sea Coast and the numismatic artefacts currently held in the museums of Kiev, Odessa,
Sevastopol, as well as the records made by Genoese notaries in Pera, Kaffa, Kilya and Lycostomo helps
the author to trace the dynamics of evolution and trade mechanisms in this region.

THE COINAGE OF GENOESE KAFFA, 1420-1475
The author was prompted to pay special attention to the Tatar-Genoese coins by the conference
organised by the Hermitage in September 2011 which he was unable to attend. But because of his
obligations before his colleagues from the Hermitage, work on this topic became his main occupation
over the last two years. The eventual scope went far beyond the boundaries set in the undelivered
conference paper, while its volume was far beyond the limits set in the conference proceedings.
Accordingly, the main arguments presented here are not an introduction to this matter but effectively
a summary of the research undertaken over these years and a prospectus of the monograph which
is currendy being finalised. The material was provided both by publications and new finds of Kaffa
coins and by the vast corpus of documents, the Massaria Caffae, which turned out to be essential for
solving the problems related to Genoese minting.
The scholars who dedicated their lives to the study of the history of the Golden Horde and the
Genoese colonies, numismatists and collectors, are still relying on O. F. Retovsky’s work The Genoese
Tatar Coins. Despite the fact that it is over a hundred years old, the solid foundations of the seminal
work by the Hermitage curator could not have been challenged in the past by individual corrections
to coin type descriptions. However, Retovsky’s compendium has one conceptual flaw. It is related
to the notions current in the historiography of the time. Historians of the nineteenth - first half
of the twentieth century interpreted the trade colonisation of the Levant in the thirteenth — fifteenth
centuries as analogous to a modern-age colonisation: Western Europeans settling foreign lands by
force, so the Genoese were treated as oppressors of the local population. Retovsky’s typology became
a numismatic expression of a concept that was then dominant but is now obsolete. In accordance with
it, the numismatist adopted the Latin name aspri for the minted silver, calling the Kaffa coins ‘Genoese-
Tatar’ rather than ‘Tatar-Genoese’. By doing this, he was obliged to treat as the ‘obverse’ the side of the
coin featuring the Genoese symbol, the ‘Genoese castle’ and the Latin legends. The typology based on
this concept and the organisation of the catalogue based on the typology of the reverse side which was
in fact the dependant side, became a hallmark for future generations and at the same time an obstacle
preventing proper understanding of the Kaffa minting. In addition, it was excessively complicated
because Retovsky interpreted as typological characteristics both the sigils corresponding to the
commissioners of the coins, and the differences of the reverse (fleurons, stars, dots) and distribution
of the legends. The numismatist interpreted intermittent combinations of the types actually used
(obverse and reverse types) as separate types, which also led to the multiplication of sections in his
system.
The political relations between Kaffa and the Tatar lords were based on the acknowledgement
of the Khans’ suzerainty by the Europeans. After each new change of power of the Horde or the
Crimea, Genoa represented by the Consul of Kaffa entered into agreements with each new Khan,
which were designated in Latin as pax etpactus. The ‘peace and pact’ between the Khan and the Consul
were equivalent to the patents issued or confirmed by the Jochids, upon enthronement, to their own
Beys or the Russian Princes. Using the terminology familiar to the historiography of Russia or the
Horde, the pax et pactus was a yarfyk issued to the Genoese vassals. Having retained the various taxes,
banalities and duties to himself (they were collected by the Khan’s Darughachi and the Kaffa Tamogt),
the Tatar overlord yielded to the Genoese administration the right to levy trade taxes and only some
industrial ones on the area forming part of the Consulate. The right to mint coins could have been
specially recorded in such ayarlyk.
The clarification of the chronology of power in the Crimean Khanate, the nature of the Genoese-Tatar
symbiosis, the volume of issued coinage and the analysis of find statistics were necessary prerequisites for
reconstructing the history of Kaffa minting. This information has allowed us to construct a chronology
252

for the diverse coinage types which had been known for a long time. Along with die connections, this
chronology reveals the logic behind typological changes and provides datings for the types of bilingual
coins as precise as months. The comparison to other quantitative and metrological characteristics of the
coinage makes it clear that from the beginning of minting and to the end of Genoese Kaffa, the Khanate
and the Consulate had a consolidated monetary policy, and that the Western Europeans were no less
successful in providing themselves and the Tatars with coinage than the House of Giray in Qirq Yer and
Orda Bazar, or Davlat Berdi and Ulu Muhammed outside the Crimea.

THE HERALDRY OF THE GENOESE CRIMEA; CONCLUSIONS
The article is a slightly reworked text of the paper presented by the author at the All-Russian Academic
Conference on £Sphragistics, Numismatics, Heraldry of the Genoese Crimea* held in September 2011
in the State Hermitage. The paper summarised the conclusions of many years dedicated to the study
of heraldic evidence from the areas in the Black Sea basin which for two centuries (fourteenth and
fifteenth) were factories of the Genoese Republic. The construction and foundation blocks bearing
the coats of arms of Genoese civil servants were the subject of studies by Russian and Italian
medievalists. The potential for the study of this generous historical material has also been considered.

THE MONGOLIAN TAMGA AND CRESCENT MOON
ON KAFFA HERALDIC DEVICES
The subject of the study are the Genoese foundation and construction blocks from Kaffa decorated
with coats of arms, including one featuring a Jochid tamga and crescent moon. This device has been
the subject of a debate which has lasted for over a hundred and fifty years. The article demonstrates
that the emblem of the Godlen Horde (the tamga with a crescent moon) on the Kaffa construction
blocks was made by the Genoese, who adopted the image of the tamga from Jochid coins and the
crescent moon from the paiza of the Khans and placed them on the heraldic device. In the political
mythology of the Mongol Empire, the crescent moon symbolised the shining charisma of Genghis
Khan. The crescent moon was a symbol of Khan power so it was depicted on the palaces, paizas and
banners of the Khans. The tamga was a property mark, which ruled out a combination of a tamga
and a crescent moon. The Khans had no coats of arms. In this case, the device with a tamga and
a crescent moon should be considered as an imaginary coat of arms of Uzbek Khan. At least, this
is how it is designated in the fourteenth-century Spanish geographical treatise which contains images
of devices from all kingdoms and dominions of the world. TJzbek’s coat of arms* was created in the
Crimea within a contact zone with a purpose of symbolically representing the figure of Uzbek Khan
who approved the signing of the Genoese-Mongol treaty of 1313—1316. Without a doubt, it is a unique
medieval artefact which demonstrates how imaginary heraldic devices could be designed and received.

Artefacts from the Crimean Gothia (mostly represented by whole or fragmented construction
inscriptions and a baptismal font), where the Principality of Theodoro existed for a relatively short
time in the fifteenth century (1411—1475), make it possible to suggest that the emblems shaped like
crowned double-headed eagles did not in fact reflect the relation to Late Byzantine aristocratic houses
(the Palaeologoi, the Grand Komnenoi and the Kantakouzenoi) but the affinity of the ruling Prince
(‘the Authentes’) with the Orthodox Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre. This is indicated by the fact
that owner monograms with the names of the Authentes (Alexios I, Alexios III, Isaac, Manuel and
Alexander) are based on the monogram ‘TO’ (Tapbos).
Two inscriptions dating back to Alexios I, ruler of Theodoro (1425 and 1427), indicate that by using
the Tapbos monogram and the double-headed eagle emblem, he positioned himself as a champion of
Orthodox Christianity. It looks likely that Alexios I was able to obtain a bull confirming his membership
of the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre from Patriarchs Theophilos II (1424) or Theophanes I
(1424—1425) of Jerusalem.
These radical changes in the status of Alexios I (the Elder), ruler of Theodoro, manifest
themselves in the first quarter of the fifteenth century in his construction campaign in which he
was assisted by Damian, the Metropolitan of Gothia: 1) they rebuilt the Great Basilica in the capital
of the Principality; 2) in October 1425, Alexios had a new palace erected next to the Basilica; 3) two
years later (in 1427), Alexei completed the construction of a votive octagonal church in the city’s
citadel dedicated to the SS Constantine and Helena, Equal-to-the-Apo sties; 4) on 10 September 1427,
Damian, the Metropolitan of the City of Theodoro and the entire Gothia, rebuilt the church of the
Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Partenit, which housed an arcosolium and a shrine with the relics
of St John of Gothia.
The existing data indicate that the introduction of double-headed eagles in Byzantium dates back
to the early period of the independent reign of Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos (1282—1328) and
can be narrowed down to 1285—1301. However, there are no known sources which would directly
point out that Andronikos II was the initiator of the secular Orthodox Brotherhood of the Holy
Sepulchre. It is not clear which reasons prompted him (or an Orthodox hierarchs of Jerusalem and
Constantinople) to do this.
When Andronikos II came to power, his ecclesiastical policies underwent some substantial
transformations: 1) by 1285, he managed to put an end to the Union of Lyon which Michael VIII
Palaeologos had accepted in 1274; 2) by 1301, an agreement was signed with the Sultan of Egypt which
established a patronage of the Emperor of Byzantium over the Orthodox sacred sites of Palestine,
primarily over the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (this state of affairs continued until 1453); 3) in 1313,
Andronikos renounced the possessory title to the monasteries of Mount Athos, which were transferred
under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchy of Constantinople.
All of these events were underscored by the urge to sacralise imperial power, which was also
reflected in the introduction of the practice of the anointing ritual in the thirteenth century. Thus,
the Emperor became a Basileus or priest. Now it was he who handed the pastoral staff to the Patriarch
of Constantinople, and on the eve of the Palm Sunday, the Basileus imitated the entrance of Jesus
Christ to Jerusalem by participating in a ceremonial procession.
Once it had come into use during the reign of Andronikos II, the emblem of the double-headed eagle
became widespread in the fourteenth century in other Orthodox satellite states of Byzantium: Serbia,
Bulgaria, the Despotate of Dobruja, the Empire of Trebizond. In the fifteenth century, crowned double-
headed eagles could be seen in Montenegro, the Principality of Moldavia, Theodoro and North-Eastern

Russia. This phenomenon indicates that representatives of the political elite of Orthodox states were
becoming involved in the cause of providing all kinds of help to the Christian sacred sites in the Holy
Land, and first and foremost, to the preservation of the Holy Sepulchre.

THE ‘HERALDIC’ INSCRIPTIONS FROM THE BYZANTINE CRIMEA
The article focuses on the heraldic’ emblems in Byzantine inscriptions from the Crimea. The first
part looks at Early and Middle Byzantine monograms. The main part of the study is dedicated to the
analysis of various aspects of Theodorite emblems: the coats of arms of Genoa and Trebizond,
monograms of the Princes of Theodoro and other symbols.

‘ONE THICK SACK WITH ANCIENT MEDALS FROM OLBIA’
(SOME MORE EVIDENCE OF CRIMEAN FINDS)
The article studies unique information on Crimean numismatic antiquities mentioned in the cor-
respondence between Count Nikolay Rumyantsev and the academic world. This concerns both major
numismatic collections and individual sensational artefacts and the circumstances of their discovery,
acquisition, expert analysis and cataloguing. Special attention is paid to the outcome of Rumyantsev’s
famous ‘numismatic trip’ around the Crimea in 1823.

KUFIC COINS FROM THE GOROKHOV HOARD
The study by Igor Dobrovolsky (1930—-2005) published here is in fact a paper of the same name
presented at the academic session of the Numismatics Department on 20 February 1985, which has been
preserved in his archive. Enclosed in the paper is the ‘Consolidated list of coins from F. B. Gorokhov’s
hoard’, the outcome of painstaking work on coin attribution by Aleksey Bykov and Igor Dobrovolsky
himself.
The Gorokhov Hoard was the largest of coin hoards ever discovered along the Slavic border
of the ‘Greater Khazaria’ of the eighth — ninth centuries. The results of Igor Dobrovolsky’s work
are of considerable importance for reconstructing the composition of the Gorokhov Hoard, which
has been dispersed to many owners. This material ought to be introduced into academic circulation,
and the Gorokhov Hoard itself needs to be interpreted as one of the key sources for the study of the
monetary circulation in Khazaria during the Early Saltov (pre-Sarkel) period and as the nearest and most
important analogue of Kufic coins from the Khazar Crimea.
