7. SUMMARY
1. INTRODUCTION
Church of St. Wenceslas in Lazany (District of Chrudim, Pardubice Region) is the natural dominant of
the village and also of the larger part of the Skutec region, where it belongs. The rescue archaeological
research, carried out in 2005 and 2006, completely changed the view of the history of this monument
and its role in the medieval history of Skutec and its surroundings. It was also an impetus for the concen-
trated observation and search for archaeological monuments to clarify the origins of the local medieval
settlement and the role of the Church of St. Wenceslas in this chapter of local history. The book you
hold in hands is devoted mainly to the catalogue accessibility of individual graves found and explored
during rescue archaeological research in 2005-2006 and in 2016. The next volume will contain an anal-
ysis of this burial ground and the results will be subsequently planted in the context of the beginnings of
medieval settlement of Skutec region, until the 12th to 14th centuries.
2. ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERISTIC
The village Lazany is situated in the Chrudim district, specifically in its southeastern part, about a kilo-
meter from the town of Skutec. The church of St. Wenceslas is at the heart of the village. Skutec area
creates a small region, separated from the lower situated and the north-facing Chrudim region with the
forest belt. It is an area in the foothills or lower parts of the Iron Mountains with an altitude in the range
of about 350 m to 700 m above sea level. In this book, we define Skutec region as a smaller area, which
towards the south reaches to a discontinuous forest belt (Fig. 2/1).
Skutec region is drained by two main streams - Zejbro and Krounka. Both are flowing into Novohradka
river and then to the Elbe river. The small river basin of the Anensky (Anne) creek is between them.
Its nameless left-hand tributaries drain town of Skutec and one of these sources springs in Lazany
(Fig. 2/2 and Fig. 2/3). In the center of the village, on a small outbuilding, stands St. Wenceslas church
(altitude of 450 m above sea level - Fig. 2/4).
3. CAUSE AND COURSE OF EXCAVATIONS
Archaeological research has been avoided by Lazany until 2005. Attention, however, was attracted
by the local church, some parts of which (the sacristy or the tower) were placed until the Romanesque
period (Poche 1978, p. 213 - Fig. 3/1). Rescue archaeological research was carried out in the drainage of
the foundations, all over the outer perimeter of the church. The excavated area was sized for individual
sections / trenches with a basic length of 3 m and with a constant width of 1 m (Fig. 3/2 and Fig. 3/3).
The depth was limited to the depth of the projected trench (1 m) or subsoil level if it was drier. Archaeo-
logical research was conducted in a standard way, with a breakdown of naturally developed layers with
documentation in the form of a standardized record using forms and key words according to a revised
manual of the London City Museum (Spence 1990). Photographic and drawing documentation (plans
and cross-sections) were taken continuously.
Rescue archaeological research began on October 17, 2005, and was based on climatic conditions until
December 3, 2005, when it had to be interrupted (Fig. 3/4 to Fig. 3/7). Sections/Trenches I to XXXIX
were examined. Rescue research continued in spring 2006 (3 May 2006) and ended on 16 June 2006
(Fig. 3/8). Research was completed in sections XXI and XXII and in ossuary (section XL). Sections XLI
to XLIII have recently been investigated. Archaeological research was to the church of St. Wenceslas
returned again in 2016 during the next stage of the restoration (19 July to 4 August - Fig. 3/9). The side
walls in the original excavation were cleaned and newly identified graves documented (Sections XVII,
XXI, XXIV). The area of drainage wells (sections XLIV to XLVI) was newly excavated (Fig. 3/10).
The obtained archaeological material has not been published except for preliminary assessments
(Frolik 2006 2007a; 2007b 2017; 2016) with the exception of information on the finding of the so-called
St. Jacob’s shell (Gryc-Wyrwa 2010) and with the exception of the technological evaluation of the cera-
mics from the ossuary (KlouzJiova - Zemenova -Svobodova - Frolik 2014).

4. CATALOGUE
Catalogue entries are prepared to collect basic documentation to the single graves on one site.
The experiences from the former catalogues are used for structure of description of individual graves
(.Frolik - Smetânka 2014; Frolik 2075; Frolik - Valova 2076; Tomkovâ 2006). The only modification is based
on the fact that excavations were made by contemporary method. The description of individual grave
had to work with presence of very complicated relationships among the graves and with great disruption
of individual graves. The facts about single graves are completed in chapter 4. Stratigraphy and relati-
onships are added in chapter 5.
Structure of individual Entries
Grave number (Lxxx) - each grave has been assigned a new number which will further serve to clearly
identify it. Lazany graves are labelled L -f grave number.
Written field documentation (TD) - an extract from a field documentation mainly in form of context recor-
ding sheet system
Maps and drawings (PK) - plans or other similar documentation showing the grave.
Finds (N) - finds from graves according to acquisition numbers in lists of finds (acquisition records).
Finds are divided into three groups. Finds as part of grave furnishings or as part of the buried individual
(A7), finds from the fill of a grave-pit (N2) and finds in general related to a grave mainly important for
its chronology(AJ). These finds are given only in a summarised manner and are not illustrated. The
anthropological material was not recorded in a consistent manner, i.e. sometimes independently, some-
times under one acquisition number together with finds from all groups. For this reason some acquisition
numbers are given twice.
Photographs - terrain (F-T) - photographs of the terrain context in which the grave or details thereof are
captured.
Photographs - finds (F-N) - primarily photographs of more important artefacts/finds from the time of
discovery are attached, documenting the original find conditions which could have changed in the
meantime.
Anthropological determination (A) - based on the analysis of M. J. Becker (2008). As part of this analysis
also the sex of children’s skeletons was determined. The results will require further discussion, but these
data remain in the text. Some skeletons from the 2006 excavations and all human bones from the 2016
excavations were analysed by P. Strânskâ (2017).
Grave description (P) - grave description based on above-mentioned documentation.
Comments (K) - notes on preserved documentation or reconstruction (if required) and information
on the stratigraphic or dating potential.
Entries N3 and F-N are given in case of their presence only.
In the case of field data, sizes are given in metres, and in millimetres for finds.
In drawings, the boundaries of single sector (trench) are expressed by a strong dashed line and the boun-
daries of the area under excavation is expressed by a faint dashed line. A strong line expresses the faces
of the wall. Some details (stone of the grave lining, bones) are highlighted in gray. Wood is highlighted
in brown, iron in red-brown and bricks in red.
Where it was possible to measure, the diameter of the rim or bottom has been added for ceramic
fragments.
