THE GREARL^* T
JLA
Selected and translated by Max Knight
Illustrated by Ladislav Svatos
The book of rhymes from which The
Great Lalula was selected was called
The Gallows Songs, by Christian
Morgenstern. That title is somewhat
misleading, since instead of being
sad or morbid, the rhymes are
delightfully nonsensical. Among the
fanciful poems there is “The Picket
Fence” (a unique here-again gone-again
row of pickets), “Fish’s Night Song”
(the only one which is also given
in the German version, and here
for once is “German” you will learn
thoroughly at just a glance), and
other titillating animals, rhymes
about creatures, including
“The Pearl Hen,” “The Stone Ox,”
and “The Nosobame.”
