Calvinism and the Bohemian Brethren in Central and East-Central Europe.
Studies on the Social and Cultural Significance of the Reformed Church
in the Early Modem Period
Summary
The title of a book was chosen to feature on the cover of this collection of essays dealing
with the social and cultural significance of the Reformed Church and the Bohemian Breth-
ren in Central and East-Central Europe in the Early Modem Period. The book itself was
published in 1731 in Berlin by Daniel Ernest Jablonski. His Historia Consensus Sendo-
miriensis was a church-historical treatise with topically political intent for that time. The
reality was that this theologian, who had been bom in the Polish-Lithuanian Common-
wealth but was working at the time at the Berlin court, was not simply concerned with pre-
senting an account of the Reformation in the Aristocratic Republic. He was also interested
in making productive use of ecumenical experiences in the past for the benefit of his own
times. But, above all, what was important for Jablonski was being able to provide evidence
that a union or, in other words, the amalgamation of various Protestant denominations could
actually work in practice, and that it was not, as his opponents claimed, just some kind of
visionary project without any genuine future prospects. Memories of the 1570 amalgama-
tion in Sandomierz, where Lutherans, the Reformed Church and the Bohemian Brethren
mutually confirmed their orthodoxy without relinquishing their independence as separate,
autonomous churches, served as a good example for his own plans for a union.
Jablonski’s treatise leads right to the central focus of this book, which was not written
from the perspective of a theologian, but from a historian’s standpoint. In this respect, de-
tailed questions of confessionalisation and definition or limitations of denominations are not
the main issues; instead, denominational and socio-political developments, relationships
and connections in the larger historical region are highlighted. These are issues for which
religious diversity is generally considered an important characteristic. Therefore, it would
be disastrous to want to write some form of group religious history without looking at other
trends. Even Jablohski’s 1731 treatise can effectively be seen as a reference work in this
context, given that his central focus was on relations between the individual evangelical
denominational communities. He himself makes it clear why it was necessary and appropri-
ate to add the Bohemian Brethren to the wider circle of the Reformed Church. Jablonski
himself originated from the Unity, which had been finally and irrevocably expelled from its
Bohemian homeland in the first half of the seventeenth century. Bom as an exile in Poland,
he began his theological education in the Polish branch of the Bohemian Brethren, which
was open to the Reformed Church at a very early stage in the Aristocratic Republic. Later
on - in an unusual occurrence at a time when states insisted on their sovereignty and de-
252 Calvinism and the Bohemian Brethren in Central and East-Central Europe
manded exclusive loyalty from civil servants towards their own community - Jabtoñski was
a church official in two societies: Reformist Court Chaplain in Prussia for the Berlin court
and, at the same time, Senior (Bishop) of the Church of the Brethren in the Polish-
Lithuanian Commonwealth..
It is essential for anyone who deals with the Reformed Church to assume a broad per-
spective. This relates to the cross-border nature of this religious denomination, its pro-
nounced internationalism and the high level of mobility among its members. A look at the
circumstances in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, in the Bohemian lands and in
Hungary, is therefore expanded time and again by a view to events in the adjacent territo-
ries. It is a fresh pair of eyes that is able to take a look at the religious developments in East-
Central Europe. A perspective such as this does not have a long-established tradition in
German national historiography. It should be bom in mind that German experts in the nine-
teenth century, generally speaking, did not know what to make of the Reformational devel-
opment in Eastern Europe. One needs only to remember the eminent historian Leopold
(von) Ranke, who not only made a marked impact on generations of Prussian-German his-
torians, but also set the standards for many decades with regard to how to approach German
and European history. In 1824, Ranke considered the concept of a Latin Christendom to be
precarious and inappropriate for the primary reason that it also encompasses “Slavic, Latvi-
an and Magyar strains”, for which the “unity” of the “Roman and Germanic nations” was,
as he wrote, ultimately alien.
In Ranke’s Roman-Germanic centred view of history, Eastern Central Europe, which is
the focus of this book, had no valid place.
When German historians, however, take a closer look at the Reformation in the ethnical-
ly, linguistically and culturally diverse region between the Baltic and the Adriatic Seas, it is
first and foremost the Germans living in the region who come into view. This frequently led
to distorting or skewed judgements, and long before the national-historically accentuated
escalation of these relationships following the First World War (Ostforschung, or Research
of the East). Well into the 20th century, other scholars seemed to be somewhat irritated by
various features and peculiarities that very clearly differentiated the course of the Refor-
mation in Eastern Europe from that in Germanic regions of the Holy Roman Empire:
the societal sponsors of the reform movement, who were in conflict with the authorities;
its different chronological course; the confusing number of trends and manifestations; and,
the legal situation and the lack of regional church structures. All of these realities facilitated
the formation of pluralist communities.
Discussions about the relationship between a particular region and the Reformation can
also be observed in the individual East-Central European national historiographies. The
Polish historian, Oskar Halecki, and his Czech colleague, Jaroslav Bidlo, are excellent ex-
amples to illustrate this point. In the 1930s, these academics were key leaders of many
fierce debates over the demarcation of the Greek-Orthodox cultural world and Western

European Christianity’s civilising mission. It was, first and foremost, church history that
was fundamental for specific regional historical conceptions, but also exposure to a steady
influence and impetus from non-scientific attributions. At the same time, the role of the
Reformation was only a component within a much broader discussion that was primarily
dealing with the overlapping of different religious influences in Eastern Europe and the
respective historical power of these influences. Furthermore, it is hardly surprising that the
older German interpretation was frequently taken up and used, rather than the relationship
between religious denomination and nation, and that - albeit the other way around - the
Reformation was interpreted in the East as a “part of German expansion” through until the
1980s.
The case studies selected for this collection of essays, therefore, cover a wide range of
aspects in terms of topic, time and place. The first thematic focus (“The regional area as
a category in religious and church history”) includes four papers that, as a whole, address
the relationship between a regional area and religious development. The thematic area
opens with an overview of the development of the reformed nature of the Reformation in
Eastern Europe from the 16th century to the present day. Based on older church area divi-
sions and demarcations within the region, the longer term spheres of contact and communi-
cation are analysed, aspects which had a very significant affect on the gradual spreading of
Calvinism in Poland, Bohemia and Hungary. Realistically, settlement and population pat-
terns were crucial factors at all times for the acceptance or rejection of individual Refor-
mation doctrines in Eastern Europe, where there was no congruence anywhere between
political and linguistic-ethnic borders. In the first instance, a simple look at these regional
conditions and areas for interaction explains why it is that such a multitude of competing
directions and parties could come to exist in this region. The advent and the demise of Cal-
vinism in East-Central Europe are then traced through the example of the Legnica-Brzeg
Piasts in Silesia, a dynasty that decided in favour of the adoption of the Reformed faith at
the beginning of the 17th century, at the same time as the Hohenzollems in Brandenburg.
The Piasts saw themselves as being cornerstones of the libertas-culture in Silesia and they
believed that religion, culture and politics were inextricably linked. Their origins and dynas-
tic connection with Poland (“Sarmatism”) played an important role in this perception, in
order to assume the traditions of freedom from the Polish Aristocratic Republic, and to
recommend themselves as an alternative to the Habsburg’s Catholic-absolutist program of
ruling. Especially in this Confessional Age, cross-border connections formed an important
safeguard and protection for Evangelical minorities, calling attention to their increasing
persecution. These aspects are explored in the third article, which addresses aspects of reli-
gious discrimination in East-Central Europe and its reverberations in Western Europe. In
the process, the particular significance of Brandenburg-Prussia for Protestantism in Eastern
Europe becomes clearly apparent. This connection was able to determine the form of prac-
tical measures for support (scholarships, collections and other financial assistance
254 Calvinism and the Bohemian Brethren in Central and East-Central Europe
measures), but it was also a means of journalistic commitment in support of persecuted
fellow believers in the East. However, in the final analysis, it will inevitably be established
that neither appropriate political interventions by foreign powers at the courts of the Polish-
Lithuanian Commonwealth or in the Habsburg Monarchy, nor relevant publications were
actually able to bring about direct or immediate changes of direction in the religious poli-
cies of individual states. In the medium and longer term, however, these attempts did not, in
fact, miss their mark, and the path towards lasting religious tolerance was thereby facilitat-
ed. As the fourth study demonstrates, the Reformists in Silesia especially were able to ex-
ploit these mechanisms and, had it not been for the international pressure and interest from
the mid 17th century through to the mid 18th century, it is likely that they would have been
doomed in their own homeland. When considering the “protective power of Protestantism”
- a role that both Sweden and Prussia used in their own interests - the relationship between
geographical region and religion has already been adopted terminologically.
The second thematic area of study is entitled “Relationship History and Comparative
Studies”, and covers five studies. These articles present very concrete types and forms of
knowledge sharing and transfer of ideas, from which the momentum from the Reformed
Church in Central and East-Central Europe evolved. The first comparative case study takes
us to Bohemia and Hungary, two countries in which the dissemination of Calvinist teaching
between 1570 and 1620 demonstrated what could almost be called contradictory character-
istics. While the Reformed Church in divided Hungary had developed into a form of Mag-
yar national church from the mid 16th century, the Reformed Church’s influence in Bohe-
mia and Moravia was entirely restricted to Bohemian Brethren. The Reformed Church’s
dominance and intellectual importance in Hungary can also inherently be seen from a cul-
tural perspective and through its role in education. However, there is no doubt in the two
groups of countries that Calvinism and the networks that emanated from the reformed terri-
tories in West and Central Europe acted as a significant catalyst for the creation of class-
oriented freedom movements in the early stages of the Thirty Years’ War. This observation
can be identified very accurately in the Reformed Church’s relationships in Silesia and the
Electoral Palatinate - the subject of the second case study. Religious communication and
travelling diplomacy are very closely linked in this respect, and both aspects contributed to
Europe splitting into clearly defined religious-political camps around 1600. An exemplary
case of the type of consequences that this division into different camps could entail is illus-
trated in the experiment of the Bohemian-Palatinate nation building in 1619/20, which is
subsequently analysed in greater depth. And yet, even this political act cannot be fully un-
derstood without consideration of the connections that the Reformed Church had built up
over the years in both of these regions. Clearly, the fact that a religious policy such as this
was so inextricably linked with the best interests of the state can be seen in more than just in
the East-Central European policies of the Electoral Palatinate. This also becomes apparent
in the Brandenburg-Prussian interventions in support of Hungarian Protestants following
Summary 255
the Peace of Westphalia, as the fourth investigation demonstrates. Once again, it is clear
that the Reformed Hohenzollems had a particular interest in the Reformed Church in East-
Central Europe. In the first half of the 18th century, the Berlin court also played an im-
portant role as mediator in the relations between the Bohemian Brethren in the Polish-
Lithuanian Commonwealth - who had long since committed themselves to the Reformed
Church - and the Renewed Unity of the Brethren, or Moravian Church, a Free Church in
Hermhut that had grown out of the traditions of Pietism in Upper Lusatia. At the same time,
the tensions between the individual groups and communities in Central and East-Central
Europe will become apparent in the final study in this thematic area, which explores these
communities which had evolved from a variety of theological views and directions.
Following the theme of “Individual and Structure”, the third area of focus encompasses
four articles that will introduce us to well-known experts on the Central and East-Central
European Reformed Church and Bohemian Brethren. An analysis of their careers, corre-
spondence, writings and networks will provide factual information on, and deeper under-
standing of, structural developments for the entire area. The first article is particularly in-
sightful, as it addresses life caught between homeland and exile, based on the example of
Jan Amos Komensky and his descendants in a Central European family of theologians. In
every generation of this family, we find one or more highly-ranked Church officials; reli-
gious awareness was clearly very pronounced in this family. Further parallels can be ob-
served with a view to education, cross-border communication and cultural orientation.
Clearly, members of a refugee, underground and minority church perceived it as their par-
ticular obligation to overcome the destructive consequences of intolerance and sectarianism,
in order to promote solidarity and unity between the church communities in Europe. The
Silesian humanist and lawyer, Joachim vom Berge, who is subsequently profiled, is com-
paratively unknown, even though he represents an important link between the Reformists in
Central and East-Central Europe. Vom Berge established a foundation which proved to be
very significant, whereby free meals, scholarships and money for books and clothing, as
well as general offerings and collections earmarked for specific purposes, were organised
for religious communities such as the Bohemian Brethren. These contributions came to
assume great importance for these communities that were repeatedly confronted with perse-
cution and marginalisation in the 16th and 17th centuries. In this respect, patronage and
endowments in the university and pre-university fields are especially significant for the
overall theme of this book. Moreover, Joachim vom Berge’s academic foundation helps to
illustrate the intellectual networks, contacts and educational relationships in Calvinist Eu-
rope, which can also be seen in scholarship guides, registers of universities, certificates of
ordination, records of family registers and dedication prefaces. Precisely because Reformed
Protestantism lacked any genuine organisational or denominational coherence, at least to
any degree like the Lutheran Church, and, furthermore, it was territorially highly fragment-
ed, these social and communicative connections among individual groups came to be vitally
