The Economist
The Partition of India in 1947 promised political and religious
freedom for the country s people. Instead, it brought displacement
and death, with thousands of women raped, at least one million
people killed, and millions more forced to leave their homes as
refugees. In this acclaimed reappraisal of Partition, published with
a new preface to commemorate the seventieth anniversary, Yasmin
Khan looks at ordinary lives alongside the larger political forces at
play and reveals how one of the twentieth century s earliest events
of decolonisation was also one of the bloodiest, with damaging
repercussions to this day.
