SUMMARY
The book From Munich to March: 167 Ordinary Days with subtitle On Political,
Social and Media Climate of the Second Republic is focused on development of
former Czechoslovakia in the period of so-called „Second Republic“ between
signing the Munich Treaty in September 1938 and invasion of Nazi army to
the country in March 1939. The danger generated by Nazi Germany and shock
caused by Munich Treaty and its consequences (Czechoslovakia lost a huge
part of its territory with German-speaking inhabitants) led to many changes
in political, social and cultural life of the country.
In present volume, the team of authors is examining the period of the
Second Republic mostly from the point of view of social and cultural - espe-
cially media - changes. The opening text Unlocking the 13. Chamber is an edited
lecture of professor of history Robert Kvacek, the doyen of Czech historians.
Professor Kvacek reflects the historiography of the Second Republic and its
uneasy position in Czech history studies. The text frames the whole book and
defines the approach.
In following two chapters, the political development of Czechoslovakia
after Munich is explained. In chapter 1 From Democracy to Totalitarism - The
Changes of Political Scene and Public Life in the Second Republic, Jan Gebhart
analyses the changes of political life and public sphere with focus on the pro-
cess of weakening the democratic principles of Czechoslovakia even before
it is occupied by Nazi Germany. In following chapter Two Uncoherent World:
Germans During the Second Czechoslovak Republic, Detlef Brandes describes
and analyzes the social and demographic consequences of Munich Treaty,
especially the situation of people who were forced to leave their homes - the
problem of immigration was one of fundamental problems of the country in
this period.
Next five chapters analyze a variety of consequences of the historical de-
velopment on mass media in Czechoslovakia (in its Czech part) in the period
of the Second Republic. Jin Pernes examines the performance of two leading
journalists - Emanuel Moravec and Ferdinand Peroutka in chapter 3 called
Emanuel Moravec and Ferdinand Peroutka - Two Fighters Against Munich During
the Days of the Second Republic. Barbara Kopplova analyses the consequences
of Munich Treaty for Czechoslovak German-speaking publishing houses in
chapter 4 The beginning of the End of German Publishing Houses in the Czech Lands
SUMMARY
During the Second Republic. Petr Bednarik analyses the development of film
industry in the respected period in chapter 5, Frantisek Hrdlicka describes
the situation of Czechoslovak Radio (chapter 6 The Second Republic and Radio)
and Jan Cebe the development of union of journalists (chapter 7 The Activity
of the Syndicate of Czechoslovak Journalists in the Period of the Second Republic).
In last two chapters Pavel Suk and Pavel Vecera analyze the content of
chosen media of the period. Suk in his text called The Second Republic in Czech
Popupar Weeklies and Children Magazines follows the reflections on political
development and everyday life of days between Munich Treaty and invasion
of Nazi armies to the country (chapter 8). Vecera offers a discourse analysis
of two editorials published during the Second Republic - the analysis depicts
the communication and discourse strategies (chapter 9 On Studying the Con-
temporary Media Discourse: How (Not) To Howl With Hitlers Germany).
The closing part of the book is an edited record of a panel discussion which
took place in October 2015 in Goethe Institut Prague. The discussion was called
On the Second Republic from the Perspective of Our times.
