Zusammenfassung: | Uncovering the historical roots of naturalistic, secular contemporary ethics, in this 2006 volume Michael Gill shows how the British moralists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries completed a Copernican revolution in moral philosophy. They effected a shift from thinking of morality as independent of human nature to thinking of it as part of human nature itself. He also shows how the British Moralists - sometimes inadvertently, sometimes by design - disengaged ethical thinking, first from distinctly Christian ideas and then from theistic commitments altogether. Examining in detail the arguments of Whichcote, Cudworth, Shaftesbury, and Hutcheson against Calvinist conceptions of original sin and egoistic conceptions of human motivation, Gill also demonstrates how Hume combined the ideas of earlier British moralists with his own insights to produce an account of morality and human nature that undermined some of his predecessors' most deeply held philosophical goals |

Gill The British Moralists on Human Nature & the Birth of Secular Ethics Cambridge Cambridge University Press 2006 1 online resource (viii, 359 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) Whichcote and Cudworth -- Shaftesbury -- Hutcheson -- David Hume Uncovering the historical roots of naturalistic, secular contemporary ethics, in this 2006 volume Michael Gill shows how the British moralists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries completed a Copernican revolution in moral philosophy. Examining in detail the arguments of Whichcote, Cudworth, Shaftesbury, and Hutcheson against Calvinist conceptions of original sin and egoistic conceptions of human motivation, Gill also demonstrates how Hume combined the ideas of earlier British moralists with his own insights to produce an account of morality and human nature that undermined some of his predecessors' most deeply held philosophical goals Hutcheson, Francis 1694-1746 (DE-588)118775367 gnd rswk-swf Hume, David 1711-1776 (DE-588)118554735 gnd rswk-swf Whichcote, Benjamin 1609-1683 (DE-588)118886541 gnd rswk-swf Shaftesbury, Anthony Ashley Cooper of 1671-1713 (DE-588)118613693 gnd rswk-swf Cudworth, Ralph 1617-1688 (DE-588)118958305 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1600-1700 Geschichte 1600-1800 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Ethics, Modern / 17th century Ethics / Great Britain / History / 17th century Ethics, Modern / 18th century Ethics / Great Britain / History / 18th century Ethik (DE-588)4015602-3 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Ethik (DE-588)4015602-3 s Geschichte 1600-1800 z 1\p DE-604 Shaftesbury, Anthony Ashley Cooper of 1671-1713 (DE-588)118613693 p 2\p DE-604 Hume, David 1711-1776 (DE-588)118554735 p 3\p DE-604 Hutcheson, Francis 1694-1746 (DE-588)118775367 p 4\p DE-604 Whichcote, Benjamin 1609-1683 (DE-588)118886541 p 5\p DE-604 Cudworth, Ralph 1617-1688 (DE-588)118958305 p 6\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-18440-3 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-85246-3 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511499272 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
