Zusammenfassung: | Analysing the key problems facing the transition countries in Central and Eastern Europe, this accessible book describes the legacy of the central planners, the progress achieved so far and the need for further reforms. It documents the outstanding successes and failures, and analyses why certain approaches to transition have worked and others have not. It tests where transition is over and shows how some countries have graduated from 'transition' to 'integration' through their efforts to join the European Union (EU). It discusses the costs and benefits of the eastern enlargement of the EU. The specific experiences of German unification, the Soviet Union's disintegration, and Russia's complex reforms are examined, as are the specific issues that need to be addressed in the Balkans. The book concludes by indicating how the expanding EU could help the poor performers through inclusion in a continent-wide integrated economic area |

IV. The new Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals 9 From transition to integration: joining the EU 10 Saving the Balkans 11 The outlook Analysing the key problems facing the transition countries in Central and Eastern Europe, this accessible book describes the legacy of the central planners, the progress achieved so far and the need for further reforms. The book concludes by indicating how the expanding EU could help the poor performers through inclusion in a continent-wide integrated economic area Europäische Union (DE-588)5098525-5 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1989-2000 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1990-2000 gnd rswk-swf Wirtschaftspolitik Free enterprise / Europe, Eastern Free enterprise / Europe, Central Post-communism / Europe, Eastern Post-communism / Europe, Central Wirtschaftsentwicklung (DE-588)4066438-7 gnd rswk-swf Beitrittsstaaten (DE-588)4698392-2 gnd rswk-swf Wirtschaftsreform (DE-588)4066512-4 gnd rswk-swf Erweiterung (DE-588)4128080-5 gnd rswk-swf Europe, Eastern / Economic policy / 1989- Europe, Central / Economic policy Osteuropa (DE-588)4075739-0 gnd rswk-swf Transformationsländer (DE-588)4651141-6 gnd rswk-swf Europäische Union (DE-588)5098525-5 b Beitrittsstaaten (DE-588)4698392-2 s Osteuropa (DE-588)4075739-0 g Wirtschaftsreform (DE-588)4066512-4 s 1\p DE-604 Transformationsländer (DE-588)4651141-6 g Wirtschaftsentwicklung (DE-588)4066438-7 s Geschichte 1990-2000 z 2\p DE-604 Erweiterung (DE-588)4128080-5 s 3\p DE-604 Geschichte 1989-2000 z 4\p DE-604 Steinherr, Alfred Sonstige oth Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-53379-9 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-82638-9 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511805646 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
