This volume presents collected essays — 16 out
of 23 either brand new or from the last five
years — illustrating- the geometrical progression
in understanding of original ancient Greek
philosophy carried out through commentary
on Aristotle. When the Ancient Commentators
project began, it focused on a little over 4-00 years.
The timespan now presented is closer to 700 years,
a period that is fully appraised by Richard Sorabji
in his introductory chapter. The essays that follow
present newly discovered fragments, several lost in
Greek and preserved in Arabic, or in Hebrew and
Arabic; one recovered by multi-spectral lighting.
There are radical re-interpretations of several
philosophers, and many re-identifications of
authorship. The Gth century AG is shown to be a
period of explosive transmission of this philosophy
into Persian and Syriac, followed in the 8th to
1 Oth centuries by transmission into Arabic. The
discussion of Arabic discoveries illuminates not
only Aristotle, but also the reception of Aristotle
in an Arabic-speaking culture that was both
IVFuslim and Christian and allowed the expression
of radically different philosophical views within
Islam, and between Islam and Christianity.
The ancient texts discussed have become a
key field within ancient philosophy. Building
on the strength of the translation series, which
has been hailed as ca scholarly marvel5, 4 a truly
breath-taking achievement’ and cone of the great
scholarly achievements of our time3, and on the
widely praised edited volume Aristotle Transformed
(now in a new edition), Aristotle Re-Interpreted
brings together critical new scholarship that is a
must-read for any scholar in the field. With all
texts translated and transliterated, the volume is
accessible to readers without specialist knowledge
of Greek or other languages, and should reach a
wide audience across the disciplines of Philosophy,
Classics and the study of ancient texts.
