Summary
he exhibition of bookplates organized as part of the session ;The
Position of Book in History of Art coincides in 2016 with the ju-
bilee of the 500th anniversary of the Polish ex libris. The com-
memoration inspires further reflections and analysis of certain
fundamental phenomena which have occurred over that time in the history
of the Polish ex libris. The exhibition is not aimed at a comprehensive pres-
entation of the history of development of this art genre, but it attempts to
present certain phenomena and principles on the basis of selected examples.
The first part of the essay is devoted to antique bookplates, divided into cate-
gories typical for entail, private and monastic libraries. The second part refers
to the 19th century and is dedicated to the art of Kajetan Wincenty Kielisinski
and library ink stamps. The third part covers the art of the Young Poland book-
plates seen primarily through beautiful, highly artistic works. The last part
presents the ex libris from the second half of the 20th century as an autonomic
type of print, independent not only of the books and the library, but even of the
person of the collector.
The 18th-century ex libris constitutes an integral part of a book and is sub-
ject to stylistic transformations characteristic of printmaking of that time. The
discussion focused mainly on the iconographic analysis dependent on the type
of library and the status of its owner. Family and entail libraries received heral-
dic bookplates consisting of all the components of the coat of arms, an ermine
coat, Latin inscriptions, and sometimes supporters (lions and griffins). In the [1
case of dedicated libraries - private and personal - the form of the design tended
to be discretionary, e.g. with no coat of arms but including Polish inscriptions,

monograms and genre scenes. In the mid-18th century, a new form of composi-
tion emerged, the so-called ,Balcewicz-type after the name of the engraver who
popularized it - Waclaw Balcewicz. He advocated a compositional shift from
the focus on the coat of arms to the elements of the inscription and description.
The Rococo and the Enlightenment periods saw the emergence of new layouts,
more informal and diverse, ranging from portraits to coats of arms or inscrip-
tions only. An interesting solution combined bookplates and visiting cards.
Despite the fact that the use of ornamentation was frowned upon as a sign of
pride, bookplates for monastic libraries featured various types of decorative
frames. The ornamentation applied therein indicated traditionalism and was
behind the prevailing fashion.
Bookplates by Kajetan Wincenty Kielisinski constitute an important chapter
in the development of the Polish ex libris, since the prints he made had no util-
itarian function. They were not intended to be pasted into a book, but to enrich
collections. By treating bookplates as works of art, Kielisinski was ahead of
his time. Endowed with tremendous talent and sense of observation, the artist
functioned within a range of small printing forms in a narrow circle of em-
ployers, friends and acquaintances who - just like himself - were enthusiasts,
antique lovers and patriots.
The ink stamp - the most disdained type of all symbols of book ownership,
which marred the pages and destroyed the paper - became the subject of the
subsequent chapter. Stamps were present in all types of libraries. They func-
tioned in reading rooms, rental facilities and libraries - both public and pri-
vate, religious and secular. They were used by artisans, officials, scientists
and writers, landowners and aristocrats, even bibliophiles. Stamps left lasting
traces on books and were impossible to remove using home methods, hence
the signs of scraping sometimes visible on their pages. The exhibition pre-
sented several examples of such stamps belonging to prominent aristocrats,
landowners and artists.
Art Nouveau was the first style which tried to include the applied arts; and
bookplates, which were inscribed in the beautiful book trend, became part of
the entire artistic process of editing and printing. The creators of ex libris de-
signs began to pay attention to the harmonious proportions between the blank
and printed surface, the size and thickness of fonts, their style corresponding
with the illustrative aspect, and the logical, optically balanced construction
of designs. Works created during this period reflect the echoes of the modern
artistic attitude. The field of the Polish ex libris design featured both the latest
formal solutions related to the shaping of art space, planes, blots and lines, and

the formulation of new themes undertaken in art around 1900. These included:
referring to the national tradition, human anxieties of the end of the century,
inclusion of folk art elements, and the creation of landscapes as an expression
of human perplexities.
The ex libris of the second half of the 20th century went two different ways.
The first one included traditional works, examples of applied graphics usually
designed at the request of a collector. The other direction assumed liberation
from the limitations of applied graphics. The ex libris became the so-called
small graphic form created in isolation from the commission. It included book-
plates dedicated to institutions, events or persons in the context of anniver-
saries of special events (such as the papal visit). In its most avant-garde ver-
sion, it becomes separated from the particular person of the collector. Jerzy
Panek created bookplates for a real person -Jozef Matysiok, a shepherd met by
chance on a mountain path - who, nevertheless, merely became a pretext for
the creation of the designs. The ex libris may be commissioned from one s fa-
vorite artist as a collector s item only and takes part in graphics competitions.
Such exclusive and artistic bookplates were created by outstanding artists:
Jozef Gielniak, Jerzy Panek and Alina Kalczynska.
