Summaries
This inn is called Rome
Dariusz Karlowicz
The essay focuses on answering the question
what is the principal essence of Polish identity.
The author discusses the problem of the specific
character of Polish identity, which has to be re-
constructed and reinstated in order to liberate
thinking of the Poles from the oppressive nar-
ration which situates Poland between East and
West, Slavophiles and Westernizers and deprives
our nation of the hallmark of sovereignty that
throughout ages constituted the noble genotype
- our Roman form. The Roman form of Polish
identity, which is, according to author, distinctive
feature of Polish life, comprises of three essential
components: Catholicism (in the spiritual realm),
republicanism (in the area of political ideals and
experience) and Latinity (in the area of spiritual
culture and civilization). They are not seen as
a simple sum but complementary and mutually
reinforcing elements which constitute the organic
form of Polish culture.

The Church in the unifying Europe
ks. Piotr Mazurkiewicz
The paper is an attempt to briefly outline the
situation of the Church in a contemporary Eu-
rope. The author reconstructs historical aspects
of the present state of the Church drawing main
demarcation lines and series of divisions between
East and West, North and South and putting for-
ward necessary corrections which complement
and elaborate the image of the problem. He em-
phasizes heterogeneous form of Orthodox and
Protestant Churches, internal divisions within
them, disparities in Church - State relations and
in the degree of secularization of respective socie-
ties, which differentiate opinions on matters such
as: abortion, euthanasia, genetic engineering or
same-sex relationships. The image of a present
state of the Church is enriched by description of
the specific situation in post-communist countries
of East-Central Europe. Their culture constitutes
the “second lung” (John Paul II) and could serve
as a specific spiritual contribution to the united
Europe. While the West of Europe is living now in
a post-identity period, in Central Europe, due to
the tradition of self-defense against communism,
a special concern for the Christian identity was
preserved of even strengthened.

The Roman roots of the Polish identity
Arkady Rzegocki
The paper is an attempt to briefly outline the
problem of spiritual heritage of the Roman repub-
lic present in Polish culture through centuries.
The author claims that awareness of continuing
the great Roman republican tradition has become
one of the most important determinants of Polish
civic life and political evolution, enabled imple-
mentation of bold projects, added confidence and
resulted in strong, lasting identity deeply rooted
in spiritual culture of Europe. Although Roman
roots were firmly present and noticeable in Polish
culture in the past, today as a result of „broken
off continuity” (R. Legutko) may be traced in
what can be called “collective and personal un-
conscious”.

The reception of Roman political ideas in the First
Republic of Poland in 16 1 and 17th century
Dorota Pietrzyk-Reeves
This article presents the heritage of the Roman re-
publican tradition as one of the main intellectual
sources that shaped political thinking and political
discourse in Poland in the sixteenth century. The
intermediate role in the diffusion of the republi-
can ideas was played by northern Italian cities,
especially Florence and Venice, where ancient
Greek and Roman ideas flourished throughout
the Renaissance and whose universities became
alma mater of the most prominent Polish thinkers

and statesmen who contributed to our repub-
lican tradition. It is argued that the most influ-
ential concept inherited from republican Rome
was Cicero’s res publica which was powerfully
applied to the Polish political community seen
as res populi, with a well-ordered mixed govern-
ment based on public virtue, the rule of law and
liberty of the citizens. It was taken for granted
by many political writers at the time that Poland
closely resembled the Roman Republic, for its
constitution was based on the same set of ideals
including that of ctvitas libera.

Res-publica - this is Rome!
Krzysztof Koehler
The paper draws attention to republican concepts
originated in Roman political philosophy which
were present in theoretical Polish writings of the
XVI-XVII century, as well as institutions and ac-
tions undertaken by citizens. There is a wealth
of compelling and indisputable evidence that the
nobility, not only spoke (verbum), but also acted
{res) in accordance with the principles and ideas
of the ancient model of res publica in times of
serious political crisis. One of illustrative exam-
ples of devotion to Roman republican traditions is
short anonymous treaty entitled Krótkie zebranie
rzeczy potrzebnych z strony wolnosci in which
his author set up a distinctive model of citizen-
ship as a strategy of suspicion towards authority,
and described potential threats to civil liberties
that are inherent quality of the monarch’s power.
He referred to old Polish traditions as well as to
republican history of Rome. Dedication to politi-
cal paradigms, models of citizenship, virtues and
moral and civic duties of ancient Rome created
a unique instance of cultural and civilization-
al continuity.

Converted to Rome? The religious issues in the
late writings of Stanislaw Brzozowski
Tomasz Herbich
The article searches for the reasons of a religious
turn in the late writings of Stanislaw Brzozowski
(1878-1911) and tries to define its main features.
It shows that Brzozowski didn’t simply came to
believe in Jesus Christ, but he rather chose Rome
as the fundamental form of European and Polish
culture. Brzozowski came to see that Catholicism
is inevitable to understand the cultural identity of
Poland and that the Church is not his adversary,
but an ally in his fight for the humanity that cre-
ates itself and against the natural and biological
powers. John Henry Newman should be seen as
the last guide in Brzozowski’s attempts to find
a modern formula of humanism.

Classicism - the risk of fulfillment
Artur Grabowski
It is one of the most commonly recurring cliché
in the history of literature to identify Zbigniew
Herbert as a classicist. The article presents a deep
insight into genealogical, historical and functional
aspects of the term classicism, looks for its various
possible meanings and contexts (e.g historical,
philosophical, theological) and demonstrates vast
areas of controversy in characterizing Herbert’s
poetical output by that ambiguous, and basically
inconceivable concept. Herbert himself refused
to be called “classic”, considering such attitude
to his poetical work as oversimplifying, spurious
and dishonest. In order to fully understand a ro-
mantic-classical diction of his poetry stemming
from avant-garde and purified to the essence
in modernistic purgatory one has to take into
account Herbert’s strenuous endeavor to create
poetry which would preserve fundamental values
of Mediterranean culture and his profound aware-
ness of the necessity of art which would not only
satisfy the natural human need of expression,
but testify “a contemplative ecstasy of humili-

The Roman form
Krzysztof Tyszka-Drozdowski
The North-South division is the hallmark of Ac-
tion Française’s historiosophy. Civilization is an
another name for Rome. The barbarity begins be-
yond the brink of Roman Empire’s conquest and
the beyond brink of Catholicism (and Maurras,
the chief and leading thinker of French monar-
chists, states that Catholicism is what endures
from Roman Empire). Those beyond the reach
of roman influence are the agents of disorder,
savagery and chaos. Germany’s and Russia’s his-
tory - because these are the principal enemies
of the roman form - consists of unceasing rebel-
lion against the classical, Mediterranean form
of being.

Smolensk. The cursed earth
Marek A. Cichocki
The article deals with the Polish experience of
East. One of main topics of the analysis is Jaroslaw
Iwaszkiewicz’s short story, masterpiece of story-
telling entitled Mother Joan of the Angels. The
author presents it as one of the most enthralling,
rich in profound meanings and symbols literary
examples of Polish experience of the East: its
seductive power and terrible fatality. The author
focuses on the narrative threads and details which
refer to historical and cultural background of the
story and unveils their hitherto hidden meanings.
From that point of view Iwaszkiewicz’s story al-
lows to see rudimentary values of Western civ-
ilization, e.g.: self-control, humility, discipline,
patience, trust which constitute the Poland’s
identity as opposed to violent and completely
unattainable dream, the idea of holiness, which
epitomizes Russian self-understanding, her politi-
cal mythology and historical policy. Therefore the
clash of both civilization seems to be inevitable.
Smolensk - a cursed land, where the action of
a story takes place, becomes a symbol and “objec-
tive corellative” of tragic and bloody ties between
Poland and Russia through centuries.

The Borderlands - a history of the concept
Przemyslaw Zurawski vel Grajewski
The article is a detailed analysis of the concept
of Borderlands which historically constitutes the
very shape and essence of the Polishness. Author
is interested in several most important dimensions
of the term and looks for answers to the ques-
tion of its origin, evolution and possible historical
definitions. The paper presents the legend of the
Borderlands in its romantic dimension, as “the
land of strangeness”, as well as in its heroic and
martyrological aspect - as “the promised land”,
“cursed land” and “paradise lost”. The concept of
Borderlands functioning today is not only a part
of historical memory but also a tool of political
debate. A memory of Borderlands is currently one
of the main fronts of the wartime propaganda -
which in turn is an essential part of the war that
Moscow has waged against Poland since 15th cen-
tury i.e. from the very beginning of the existence
of the imperial Russia.

Staring at the East
Przemyslaw Pi^tak
For a long time, Russia has been a natural point
of orientation for the Polish intellectuals, either as
a source of inspiration or an enemy to be opposed
to. A third way, represented in the nineteenth
century by the Polish philosopher and writer
Henryk Kamienski, was based on the idea that
Russia can be “civilized”, and that Poland is the
only nation spiritually capable of understanding -

and influencing - the Russian soul. Exploring the
intellectual sources behind the ideas of Kamienski
can therefore help us better understand why also
in the present times, many thinkers and politi-
cians still believe that changing Russia is the key
to changing Europe - for better or for worse.

Carl Schmitt in Russia: Europe, Ukraine and the
German Roots of the New Russian Geopolitics
Stefan Auer
The protracted crisis in Ukraine has exposed fun-
damental political differences between West Eu-
ropean leaders and their counterparts in Russia.
The very existence of the European Union (EU)
was meant to have refuted geopolitics as a useful
theoretical lens through which to view power re-
lations in Europe. After all, the European project
is based on the idea that boundaries no longer
matter and that national sovereignty is obsolete.
And, yet, geopolitics remains critically important
- certainly for Europe’s potential enemies, but
also for Europe, itself.

Is Russia Catholic? The dispute between Ivan
Gagarin SJ and Alexei Khomyakov
Marta Kwasnicka
The paper presents a polemic between Ivan
Gagarin (1814-1882), Jesuit, who was in his
time one of the relatively numerous converts to
Catholicism from Orthodoxy, and a prominent
representative of Slavophilism, Alexei Khomyakov
(1804-1860). Distressed by a widespread wave of
nihilism and predicting the possibility of Russia
being on the brink of revolution, Gagarin saw
spiritual rebirth as a sole salvation of his country
which according to him was possible only in un-
ion with Roman Catholicism. He presented his
idea in the book: Will Russia become Catholic
[La Russie sera-t-elle catholique). Project of Rus-
sia’s conversion to Catholicism elicited a reaction
of Khomyakov. The exchange of letters between
two thinkers remains one of the most intriguing
topics in the history of nineteenth-century Rus-
sian thought.

Postcolonial Poland and Russia
Ewa Thompson
The article discusses the problem of the specific
character of postcolonialism in East Central Eu-
rope. In opposition to mainstream postcolonial
theory the author presents her own conception
of colonialism, claiming that the main reason for
eliminating East Central Europe from postcolo-
nial studies is their Marxist character. Marxist
theory relegates nationality to the area of false
consciousness, and for that reason Marxist-influ-
enced scholars are unable to accommodate the
colonial character of Russian expansion. Russian
colonialism is destructive of Polish identity be-
cause of philosophical differences between the
concepts of national identity in Poland and Rus-
sia. Specifically, Polish identity is associated with
the acceptance of Aristotelian logic and its two
fundamental principles of identity and non-con-
tradiction. in contrast, Russian self-perception
emphasizes the intuitive and paradoxical aspect
of national identity and allows for illogical defi-
nitions of such opposing concepts as good/bad
or true/false. Although Aristotelian logic is not
synonymous with infallibility and does not protect
against feeble-mindedness and evil, it does help
in rightly assessing the potential danger of wor-
shiping the state, it does not blur the distinction
between nation and empire, and it tones down
the tendency (inherent in statehood) to subdue
other nations in the name of alleged superiority
of the empire.
