505 | 8 | |a Critics have traditionally treated the Old English poems about saints as individual, autonomous works, relating but little to one another except in a broadly generic way. Bjork challenges the traditional view with an examination of the major structural feature that all the poems share: direct discourse.Syntactical and rhetorical analyses of the five poems reveal a consistent use of spech in creating stylistic norms or ideals - stylistic icons - in spiritually perfect figures. In all the poems the speech of the saints in formal, rhetorical, and balanced, the stylistic analogue both of their immutable fith and of the Christ-saint figural connection. The speech of all other characters is measured against this standard; their ability or inability to meet the saintly ideal in language reflects their level of spiritual awareness. The consistency with which these patterns appear sheds new light on the conventions of Old English poetic hagiography | |

Bjork Toronto University of Toronto Press [2016] © 1985 1 online resource txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Description based on online resource; title from PDF title page (publisher’s Web site, viewed Jan. 06, 2016) Critics have traditionally treated the Old English poems about saints as individual, autonomous works, relating but little to one another except in a broadly generic way. The consistency with which these patterns appear sheds new light on the conventions of Old English poetic hagiography Geschichte 600-1100 gnd rswk-swf Direct discourse in literature English poetry Old English, ca. 450-1100 History and criticism Hagiography Altenglisch (DE-588)4112501-0 gnd rswk-swf Direkte Rede (DE-588)4012417-4 gnd rswk-swf Stil (DE-588)4124256-7 gnd rswk-swf Lyrik (DE-588)4036774-5 gnd rswk-swf Verserzählung (DE-588)4187991-0 gnd rswk-swf Legende (DE-588)4035028-9 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Heiligenvita (DE-588)4127195-6 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Heiligenvita (DE-588)4127195-6 s Verserzählung (DE-588)4187991-0 s Direkte Rede (DE-588)4012417-4 s Geschichte 600-1100 z 2\p DE-604 Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s 3\p DE-604 Altenglisch (DE-588)4112501-0 s Lyrik (DE-588)4036774-5 s 4\p DE-604 Legende (DE-588)4035028-9 s Stil (DE-588)4124256-7 s 5\p DE-604 http://www.degruyter.com/doi/book/10.3138/9781442678057 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
