Annas Boston University Schools of Law and Medicine Striking advances in medical technology have brought the legal implications of applied human genetics into sharp relief. Emerging controversies have now enveloped law, medi cine, and society. The public health policy problems that have been spawned have fully engaged the attention of the judicial and legislative branches of state and federal govern ment. In Genetics and the Law, a distinguished faculty of scientists, physicians, lawyers, and ethicists extensively explores the major issues in modern genetics which now con front the law. Among the crucial topics covered are: • the legal rights of the fetus • the XYY controversy • law and the prenatal diagnosis of hereditary disorders • informed consent requirements in genetic counseling • legal implications of genetic screening • legal aspects of artificial insemination • sterilization of the mentally handicapped • malpractice risks in genetic counseling • governmental and social restriction of experiments involving gene manipulation, cloning, and in vitro fertilization Ethical, moral, and legal considerations of current genetic problems, including eugenics, are dealt with in depth.
