And yet as president he presided over a massive expansion of the slaveholding plantation system--particularly with the Louisiana Purchase--squeezing the yeomanry to the fringes and to less desirable farmland. Now Roger Kennedy conducts an eye-opening examination of that gap between Jefferson's stated aspirations and what actually happened. Kennedy reveals how the Louisiana Purchase had a major impact on land use and the growth of slavery. He examines the great financial interests that beat down slavery's many opponents in the South itself (Native Americans, African Americans, Appalachian farmers, and conscientious opponents of slavery). He describes how slaveholders' cash crops (first tobacco, then cotton) sickened the soil and how the planters moved from one desolated tract to the next. Soon the dominant culture of the entire region--from Maryland to Florida, from Carolina to Texas--was that of owners and slaves producing staple crops for international markets. The earth itself was impoverished, in many places beyond redemption. None of this, Kennedy argues, was inevitable. He focuses on the character, ideas, and ambitions of Thomas Jefferson to show how he and other Southerners struggled with the moral dilemmas presented by the presence of Indian farmers on land they coveted, by the enslavement of their workforce, by the betrayal of their stated hopes, and by the manifest damage being done to the earth itself |

He focuses on the character, ideas, and ambitions of Thomas Jefferson to show how he and other Southerners struggled with the moral dilemmas presented by the presence of Indian farmers on land they coveted, by the enslavement of their workforce, by the betrayal of their stated hopes, and by the manifest damage being done to the earth itself</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" And yet as president he presided over a massive expansion of the slaveholding plantation system--particularly with the Louisiana Purchase--squeezing the yeomanry to the fringes and to less desirable farmland. He focuses on the character, ideas, and ambitions of Thomas Jefferson to show how he and other Southerners struggled with the moral dilemmas presented by the presence of Indian farmers on land they coveted, by the enslavement of their workforce, by the betrayal of their stated hopes, and by the manifest damage being done to the earth itself Jefferson, Thomas / 1743-1826 / Et l'esclavage Jefferson, Thomas / 1743-1826 / Influence Jefferson, Thomas / 1743-1826 fast Jefferson, Thomas / 1743-1826 Jefferson, Thomas 1743-1826 Influence Jefferson, Thomas 1743-1826 (DE-588)118711962 gnd rswk-swf USA Government (DE-588)2027858-5 gnd rswk-swf 1775 - 1865 fast Geschichte 1775-1865 gnd rswk-swf Esclavage / États-Unis / Extension aux États libres Propriétaires de plantations / États-Unis / Activité politique / Histoire Exploitations agricoles familiales / États-Unis / Histoire Colonisation intérieure / Aspect politique / États-Unis / Histoire HISTORY / State & Local / General bisacsh Grondbezit gtt Slavernij gtt Louisiana Purchase gtt Family farms fast Influence (Literary, artistic, etc.) fast Land settlement / Political aspects fast Louisiana Purchase fast Plantation owners / Political activity fast Political science fast Slavery / Extension to the territories fast Territorial expansion fast Geschichte Politik Politische Wissenschaft Sklaverei Louisiana Purchase Slavery United States Extension to the territories Plantation owners Political activity United States History Family farms United States History Land settlement Political aspects United States History Sklaverei (DE-588)4055260-3 gnd rswk-swf Louisiana Purchase (DE-588)4339259-3 gnd rswk-swf USA Jefferson, Thomas 1743-1826 (DE-588)118711962 p Sklaverei (DE-588)4055260-3 s 1\p DE-604 USA Government (DE-588)2027858-5 b Geschichte 1775-1865 z 2\p DE-604 Louisiana Purchase (DE-588)4339259-3 s 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 0-19-515347-2 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=264855 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
