to Personalities of Literature

The work of Bedrich Hrozny, a prominent Orientalist who deciphered
the Hittite language, has been the subject of numerous works, both
academic and aimed at a wider public. The body of our knowledge on
his life as summed up by his pupil Lubor Matous, however, has up to
now been obtained exclusively from official documents or facts con-
tained in Bedrich Hrozny’s published memoir. This volume presents
for the first time an entirely new set of facts from his correspondence,
placing this scholar’s life story in new and largely unknown contexts.
This volume brings forth a compact mass of material taken
from the literary archive of the Museum of Czech Literature, where
Hrozny’s letters addressed to other researchers, colleagues, friends and
acquaintances have been preserved as part of the inheritance of their
recipients. Very few of their mirror pieces of correspondence have been
found in other Czech archives.
In particular, Bedrich Hrozny’s private letters to his erstwhile
schoolmate Otokar Simek, later a professor of French, Czech and
German at the business school in Hradec Kralove, long remained

unknown, and their long-standing friendship, which developed during
their time together at grammar school in Kolin at the end of the
19th century, were long ignored. These letters, written in Hrozny’s
barely legible hand and containing many foreign-language terms,
acronyms, abbreviations, references to figures long forgotten and
works of literature, with quotations in Czech, French, German, Latin
and Greek, do not lend themselves to understanding unless thorough
research has been done.
Based on the thematic range of the surviving correspondence,
the commentary to the letters has been divided into several sections,
each of which explains in some detail the context of the events
mentioned therein. Individual chapters analyse Bedrich Hrozny’s
stay and study in Vienna and events at the local Faculty of Theology;
they expound on his long functioning as librarian at Vienna University
and also on some of the political happenings at the end of the 19th
century and the beginning of the 20th. The correspondence is evidence
of Hrozny’s lifelong interest in literature and shows us his supreme
proficiency in and extraordinary breadth of view of contemporary world
literature, prose and poetry alike. Among the sources thus preserved we
find frequent mentions of Hrozny’s work as a scholar, which he com-
ments on and explains to his friend and fellow linguist Otokar Simek.
These letters are an especially precious source of reference for the
mapping of Hrozny’s life during the First World War and his military
service. Moreover, they include the oldest direct testimony of his
deciphering of Hittite. In one of his letters Bedrich Hrozny reveals to
his friend in some detail his conclusions concerning the decipherment
of this language, based on concrete examples later published as part of
a preliminary report destined for the German Oriental Society.
A significant reference material with regard to works of scholar-
ship by Bedrich Hrozny, these letters also shed light on the translation
and literary activities of Otokar Simek, whose extensive volume on the
history of French literature, his major achievement, presents portraits
of many writers and gives one of the most valuable analyses of French

literature in a Czech context. The body of letters dated after the
establishment of the Czechoslovak republic in 1918 can be appreciated
as an important supplement to what we know about the cultural milieu
of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, Hrozny’s fortunes and
activities at the university as a lecturer and a scholar, archaeological
research carried out in the Near East in the 1920s and Hrozny’s lecture
tours. Other valuable data can be mined in respect of the 1930s and
1940s, when Bedrich Hrozny’s main occupation was the deciphering
of “Hittite” hieroglyphic inscriptions and later also Proto-Indian and
Cretan script, and also the period of the Second World War and the rise
of Communism after its end.
Following an introduction, the mass of the correspondence
itself is divided into two sections, the first of which gathers private
and confidential letters addressed by Bedrich Hrozny to Otokar Simek
(spanning from 1897 to 1945); the second part comprises official cor-
respondence to other recipients. The most extensive letter groups
are addressed to the following figures: a professor of English language
and literature named Otakar Vocadlo, who helped Hrozny to arrange
for the English translation of his Nejstarsi dejiny PfedniAsie, Indie a Krety
[Ancient History of Western Asia, India and Crete], the librarian Jaroslav
Sutnar, including much specific information on the forming of libraries
after the founding of the independent Czechoslovak republic, the
publisher and editor Jaroslav Snajdr, the librarian Jan Thon, the editor
Josef Träger, the publisher Josef Richard Vilimek, the journalist Arne
Laurin. Appended to these letters are items of formal correspondence
such as notes of congratulation, notes of inquiry, calling cards and
short notices, bearing testimony to Bedrich Hrozny’s communica-
tion with, among others, the writers Josef Svatopluk Machar, Marie
Majerova and Vaclav Tille, the literary historians and critics Arne
Novak, Otakar Fischer and Vladimir Andreevich Frantsev, the professor
of aesthetics and literary history Jan Mukarovsky, the linguist Bohuslav
Havränek, the general Kamil Holy, the professor Jan Jelinek, the editor
and translator Jaromir Borecky, the professor of philosophy and pedagogy

The hitherto unpublished material in this collection makes it
an original source of reference, A considerable supplement to what we
know about the life of Bedrich Hrozny, it modifies and provides many
details, thus enabling us to better understand many events of the first
half of the 20th century.
