HISTORICAL INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE MIDDLE WESTERN
BULGARIA XV ֊ XIX century
(for the regions of Pernik, Breznik, Radomir, Trun, Godech, Tsaribrod
and Pirot)
The book is a collection of articles about the historical past of the regions of
Pernik, Breznik, Radomir, Trun, Godech, Tsaribrod (now Dimitrovgrad) and Pirot.
These towns are geographically located between the rivers Struma and Nishava.
Most of them are nowadays relatively small but important centers in what is today
the province of Pernik. Godech is a part of the province of Sofia, while Tsaribrod
and Pirot are in Serbia. Sofia is the major city and the administrative centre which
has influenced strongly their century-long economic and spiritual development. The
area viewed (with the exception of Tsaribrod and Pirot) is a part of what is known
today as Middle Western Bulgaria, whose settlements in the high valleys, once,
during the Ottoman rule, used to exist and interact without the border that separates
them nowadays. This circumstance requires that the historian should cross freely
the contemporary state borders, as to be able to reconstruct the past according to
the archives, the historian’s own professional experience and view on the historical
events.
The historical researches of the period between XV to XIX century, during
which these traditionally inhabited by Bulgarians lands were a part of the Ottoman
Empire, are relatively sparse. Due to a plethora of reasons - not the least the division
of the Pirot sanjak between Serbia and Bulgaria according to the Treaty of Berlin
from 1878, their study was hindered by, and strongly dependent on the political
conjuncture.
The authors of the articles included in the book have been studying the different
aspects of the economic, political and spiritual development of the region for many
years. The texts discuss subjects like the economic development of the settlements
along Upper Struma from XV to XIX century, the ore-mining in Breznik, and the
building and preservation of churches and monasteries, which had a crucial role
during that period. It is important to clarify the questions about the political activity
in the region - among the population of Trun during 1830; the issue about Vasil
Levski’s deed here; about the attempts for uprising in 1876; about the influence of
the Russo -Turkish war and its consequences in the regions of Breznik and Trun.
A large part of the source material is barely known or completely unknown to

the Bulgarian historical archives, unpublished Ottoman and Bulgarian documents
have also been analyzed. For the first time in print is the complete collection of
pictures of gravestones drawn by the famous Bulgarian archeologist, sculptor and
conservationist Dimitar Buchinski, who sought them in the region during the 1930 -
and which are now lost for the science.
The dear reader^will immediately notice the scattered nature of the investigations.
The reasons behind this are the singularities of the local historical development,
which did not follow the national pattern of development. After encountering these
specific characteristics in the local culture and economy, the authors decided in
favour of the method of microhistorical study. Microhistory allows and at the same
time requires a close scrutiny of each issue in its specific geographic and social
environment. As if aided with a microscope the historian can ‘magnify’ each single
issue, to view its details and study it in depth. The use of microhistorical analysis
makes the specific characteristics of the local living become clearly outlined, as they
are otherwise indiscernible from the general national history. In our geographical
area they are expressed by the economic backwardness, preservation of century-
long traditions and feeble cultural influence by European progress. Very often these
singularities are as if hiding, and are often overlooked, but this does not remain
without consequences ֊ researches are difficult to conduct and are few, they rarely
enter the Bulgarian historical discourse, and the absence of the region from this
discourse affects negatively the cultural and spiritual attitudes and forms low self-
esteem in the local communities. For this reason the aim of the articles included in
the book has always been to reveal the regional historical characteristics which took
place simultaneously with the common processes in the Bulgarian society during
XIV to XIX century. The texts prove that these local singularities add even greater
colour to our national history, while at the same time raise new issues, which are to
be subject of discussions and future research.
We hope that the book will help the creation of a more complete picture of the
history of the settlements between the rivers Struma and Nishava in the period of the
Ottoman rule. This history lacks glorious episodes, but we are interested in the Tittle
matters’ which made the life here stable and constant, and left enduring traces in our
modem world.
