SUMMARY
Volodymyr Masliychuk
IVAN
MAZEPA
AND
SLOBODA
UKRAINE
ТГ
van
Mazepa
(apr.
1639-1709) —
one of the most outstanding and at the same time the most
I controversial Ukrainian
hetman.
Evaluation of his activities is primarily historical and
I political. Wide historiography, rich literature, political debates and the politics of memory
M
shows us a remarkable role of this figure not only in Ukrainian history or for the history
of complicated Ukrainian-Russian relations, but in the past of the whole space of Central and
Eastern Europe.
Former
sloboda
regiments were important parts of Eastern Ukraine and parts of the border
regions (Kursk
,
Belgorod, Voronezh
)
of the Russian Federation
.
Since the mid
XVII
century and
till
1765
there were Ukrainian Cossack autonomous units. Russian influence and imperial reforms
tangibly predestinated many features of this region.
Hetman
s
power attitude about neighboring
sloboda
regiments was mixed and rather complicated. For
Bohdan Khmelnytsky
and his follow¬
ers
sloboda
regiments population were criminals escaped from Herman jurisdiction. But gradu¬
ally, one can observe a tendency to attach those regiments to Hetman s power, which is especially
noticeable during the governing of the
hetman
Samoilovych. But closer examination gives us
the opportunity to recognize that Ivan
Mazepa
continued the policy of the previous hetmans.
About
Mazepa
s
politics on the eastern borderlands of
Hetmana
te
there were two common
stereotypes: the desire of
Mazepa,
since his participation in the embassies in Moscow for
hetman
Samoilovych, to attach
sloboda
regiments to Malorosia ( Little Russia ) and about his active
participation in the colonization of the borderlands of Great Russia . Although the policy of
het¬
man
Ivan Samoilovych about
sloboda
regiments was rather linked to the activities of
hetman
s
nephew, Mikhail Vasilyevich, the colonel of Hadiach. It is necessary to recognize
—
Mazepa
was
opposed thorough survey and demarcation between hetman s and
sloboda
regiments. Similarly,
during the colonization of the land by the river
Sejm
and purchase of the land from the Great
Russia servitors.
Hetman Mazepa
continued the initiatives of his predecessor Ivan Samoilovych.
During the reign of Ivan
Mazepa
connection between the Hetmanate and
Sloboda
regiments
significantly deepened. Herman himself was elected to the borderland between Hetman s regiments,
Sloboda
Ukraine and the Crimean Khanate, he was the commander of
sloboda
regiments in several
military operations in
1688-1697
years. Hetman s conflicts with the southern regiments and famous
denunciation against
hetman
Vasily Kochubey and on Ivan
Iskra
as well in
1708
directly reflected
on the
sloboda
regiments. Geopolitical situation drew the new contours of relations with
sloboda
regiments
:
general colonization on r. Samara, connections with
Sich
of Zaporizhzhya, the projects of
Hetman s opponent Peter Ivanenko to access western
sloboda
regiments to the Hetmanat and reset¬
tlement of the Kharkiv (Izyum) and Ostrogozhsk regiments on the right bank of the Dnieper.
It is necessary to recognize, that the Hetman s power came across with a lot of problems on
their borderland territories. The history of permanent migrations, conflicts, the struggle for land,

especially in close to the
sloboda
regiments southern hetman s ones (Poltava
,
Gadyach
,
Lubensk)
highlighted the complexity of government initiatives in the region, other relationships with the cen¬
tral government than it is commonly perceived today. In this case, a very important seemed com¬
munication and colonization flows between
sloboda
regiments and Poltava, neighborhoods along
the river Kolomak, where the Russian and Swedish armies met to fight afterwards.
Sloboda
Ukraine at the end of
XVII —
beginning of
XVIII
century was involved into the signifi¬
cant geopolitical battles. The peculiarity of the state reforms, distant campaigns during the Great
Northern War, the rising of Kondrati Bulavin in
1708
depleted
sloboda
regiments. Goals and ambi¬
tions of the local elite, continued colonization processes, a strong imperial influence determined the
motivation for behavior in borderlands. Military actions in these areas, when
Hetman
Ivan
Mazepa
and his entourage moved to the side of the Swedish King Charles
XII
and, in fact, led the anti-imperial
movement could really cause no political activity here. Misunderstanding of the situation and the in¬
tensive destruction during the war contributed to the future rather peculiar memory of these events.
In the autumn of
1708,
being approached by Swedish- Cossack army,
sloboda
regiments were in¬
volved by Russian commanders for auxiliary operations. At the same time with the quartering of the
Russian army, along with the placing of the main command posts, Russians created on this border¬
land territory for future battles. And
,
to crown all, the city Lebedyn became the place of repression
and punishment on supporters of
Mazepa.
Hostilities of winter
1709
represented by different parties
in rather controversial way. Residents of the city Kotelva (Gadiach Regiment
(
Hermanat
) )
surren¬
dered to the army of Charles
XII,
but later, in order to avoid punishment from the Russian authori¬
ties, joined Akhtyrka
sloboda
regiment. Battles near Krasnokutsk been attributed as a victory both
to Swedish and to Russian armies. Swedish troops ravaged several settlements, not relying on long-
term military action. Weather conditions cease hostilities, front was moved to the Poltava region.
The victory of the Russian army in the Battle of Poltava and the subsequent defeat of the troops of
Peter the Great in the Prut campaign predestined the existence of Cossack autonomy in the coming
decades. The influence of the imperial administration constantly increased. Question of the abolition
of Cossack government became a matter of time and changes in the geopolitical balance of power.
Public policy of condemnation of the action of Ivan
Mazepa,
repressions, anathema of the Orthodox
Church dependent on the state, attempts of memoriaHzation those events in
1709
and features of
local understanding of those historical events determined the attitude to the
hetman.
Advanta¬
geously, this ratio tended to follow imperial and church initiatives. Soviet vision of
Hetman
was
also imperial,
-
as a traitor and collaborator, at the same time, the activities of Peter the Great were
presented as an example to
f ollow.
After a long break and imperial policies of memory, after the proclamation of Ukrainian inde¬
pendence, the situation with the interpretation of events and relationships for the
hetman Mazepa
began to change. In the border areas began new process of The invention of tradition and fighting
for the memory. Especially these processes accelerated during the presidency of Viktor Yushchen-
ko in
2005-2010
years. Several initiatives to recall
hetman Mazepa
and his supporters were crowned
with success: the tomb of the Cossacks in Lebedyn (Sumy region)
,
and few
-
with lesions
:
a mon¬
ument to
Hetman
in Kolomak memorial under Gorodnov (Kharkiv region)
,
attempts to give the
name of
Hetman
to the street in Kharkov. The politics of memory not only uses the old stereotypes
or deny them, but also creates new myths, invents new events and remembers , historical figures.
Attention to the
Hetman
recently in the border areas is the evidence of continuing of formation an
identity, awareness of the role and historic place of these areas in the broad European sense. This
continue the process of fighting for history in the situation of a weak role of the historian and
historical science.
