KOSOYA DWELLINGS
- RAHOVECI
Dwellings are an element of the geography study, which give a
preview of the level of growth and the general economical and social
situation of its population. In the formation, growth and the type of
dwelling, the physical-geographical factors such as the composition of
the land, the climate, the water, the flora, socio-historical and
economical factors, play a very important role. The objective of the
study in this publication are the dwellings in the municipality of
Rahoveci from the historical, geographical and demographical aspect. I
have tried to present the scientific truth, based on archeological proof,
historical facts, archival data, spoken materials and other information
collected in the field. Briefly some of the main characteristics of the
dwellings of this municipality have been presented, including the
geographic position, spatial distribution, families, neighborhoods,
topography facts, archaeological evidence, archival and historical
resources, statistical data, demolitions, destructions, killings and wars
up to the year 1999. It has not been presented the origin and the
movements, because a more complex research needs to be done for
that, for which I think that the future generations should do.
This publication presents the history of the dwellings, the
invasions and different rules upon the population of these places and
the information given by them in regards to the dwellings. The most
important are the statistical data on the number of inhabitants in these
places. This publication is published as a part of a monographic study
of the dwellings of Kosovo, which will be published in a few editions.
Due to the geographic position, the appropriate living condi-
tions, natural resources and the climate, the municipality of Rahoveci
has been inhabited and has had dwellings ever since the ancient times.

In many locations, if there were archeological researches to be done
many facts would be found on the early dwellings. Because of wars,
diseases, fires, earthquakes the dwellings have been demolished and
abandoned, and then again after some time were revived and rebuilt
again, in that same area or somewhere nearby. In the past, in the
Kosovo region and even wider in the Balkans the Illyrians (the
ancestors of Albanians) lived. Because of invasions, migrations of
different nations this Illyrian territory became smaller. In this way the
population structure started to change especially when the Slavs from
the north and the Karpate Mountains came. When the Slavs came many
geographic Illyrian antic names have changed, some have been
forgotten and some have been changed to Slav names.
The dwellings network in the municipality of Rahoveci consists
of the municipal central administration, local centers, dwellings,
neighborhoods, and groups of houses, altogether 35 dwellings. In terms
of spatial distribution, the largest number of the dwellings in the
municipality of Rahoveci are on the mountain sides, a small number is
in the lower places (valleys) and around the main roads. There are two
types of the spatial distribution of the dwellings; the collective
dwellings and distributed (dispersed) dwellings.
In this publication, the readers will be more familiar with
historical and demographical facts for the dwellings in the Rahoveci
region. Its own inhabitants can best interpret the history, geography,
economy and the ethnography. Therefore, the history, the different wars
and our heroism should be written by us, in an authentic way, not like it
has happened until now with the dwellings of Kosovo (Rahoveci), to be
written by others in a subjective way and with the tendency of being
biased.
