Í
hen first coined as a concept during the Cold War, the Third World was associated
th hope and possibility. This area, caught between the first (capitalist) world and the
cond (communist) world, could provide an alternative path to the future, changing
.elf and, at the same time, the international order. However, despite the optimism
id ideas that became clustered around the project of Third Worldism, most of its goal;
?re not achieved, and now, in the early twenty-first century, a new set of challenges is
»resented by the dominance of a globalized neo-liberalism.
n
this wide-ranging and challenging book, two acknowledged experts provide a critical
iccount of the international politics and history of the Third World. They track the
:ey periods in its history up to the present day, and at the same time examine the
deas
and constructs that emerged. This enables them to show the political and social
;onsequences of the previously dominant, westernized approaches towards the Third
Vorld and to advance other models for understanding international development.
Jnderpinning the book is an argument for an alternative way forward: one that places
egional cooperation rather than the sovereign nation-state at the centre.
