Summary
Andrzej Grabianka (1823-1883), a Polish landowner from
Podolia (Ukraine), was invited by Tsar Alexander II to a body
called Editorial Commission to prepare a peasant reform. He
was an advocate of granting land to peasants and as one of the
few in the Commission was against corporal punishment for
the peasants; thus it was thanks to him that in the final resolu-
tions there was a project to remove corporal punishment from
the Penal Code after the emancipation reform was introduced
(1861). While in the Commission, he prepared various docu-
ments, among them the “Statistics on Landed Property in Kiev,
Podole and Volhynia Guberniyas” (Sankt PetersburgiSôo)1,
covering landholding in three Ukrainian guberniyas (of Kiev,
Podole and Volhynia). The Statistics was required for the peas-
ant reform in Ukraine. It contains important information for
all three guberniyas about the number of peasants (“souls”)
entered in Russian registers (“revisions”, i.e. censuses) and
residing in the land of nobles (bound to individual lands). The
“revision souls” - not all the peasants living in landed estates
but only males, usually heads of the family. Women, children
and other persons living under one roof with the “souls” were

not recorded on those “revisions”. A part of the “souls” had
their small farms and cultivated land, others owned only gar-
dens or only cottages. The poorest were put up at others’ places.
All “souls” were obliged to specific services or payments to the
manors. Those who worked on the manor or for the landlord
enjoyed the right to use a small portion of the manorial land
and they also could in their spare time to get hired to work in
the manor for a paying job. Richer peasants hired poorer ones
who did various works for them, including their obligatory ser-
vices to the manor. In The Statistics for the Kiev, Podole and
Volhynia guberniyas we find the data about various social cat-
egories of peasants. The most affluent group was the group of
peasants with their own full yoke (the so-called “the yoked” -
tiaglie), i.e. the beasts of burden (oxen). The poorer category was
made by peasants with only a part of the yoke (one ox), called
“the part-yoked” ( odinochnie, polutaglie) and those without
beasts of burden, called “the walkers” (or pedestrians ֊ pieshie).
Both categories were bound to corvée labour either with their
animals or without. The next two groups were not obliged to
perform constant corvée labour: the ogorodniky who possessed
only a little garden around their houses; the kormornyky (
who did not own houses and were living in the houses or out-
buildings of other peasants. The ogorodniky and kormornyky
performed pedestrian corvée or paid small taxes in cash or
in kind to those, who provided them with accommodation.
Grabianka’s Statistics includes the data of total area of ara-
ble land and wastelands for all landholdings; only for some
districts there is additional information about the land culti-
vated by peasants. Sometimes there are given areas of pastures
and grasslands in which the peasants could graze their animals.
There is information for all three guberniyas about the size
of landholdings for peasants (“souls”) perform corvée labour,
either with animals or without.
In The Statistics there are data about ca. 5530 landhold-
ings that included over 7600 settlements in the guberniyas of

Kiev, Podolia and Volhynia. The total area of those amounted
to ca. 10.8 million desiatinas2(ca. 11.8 million hectares). They
were inhabited by 1,437,029 “revision souls” (see Table 4).
Juxtaposing the general data from Grabianka’s text with the
data derived from other sources we can see that the author of
The Statistics had reliable and fairly complete knowledge about
the state of private ownership in Ukraine, and for this reason
his statistics are a valuable source material for the history of
the 1861 peasant reform. At the same time it gives us important
data for the history of landownership in the territory, allowing
us to determine the amount of land owned by Polish landlords.
At the same time it provides a rich material for the history of
settlement and onomastic of the analysed region.
The data derived from The Statistics have been copied to
a form worked out by the editor who preserved almost all col-
umns of the original.

the following positions:

2. Original number of landholding in the given table (district)
in the Statistics manuscript.
3. Abbreviated name of the guberniya.
4. District name.
5. Indication of partial ownership.
6. Name(s) of settlement in Russian.
7. Name)s) of settlement in Polish.
8. Owner’s family name in Russian. * 5
