Summary
Zois
Republic of
Letters
The Role of Letters in Slovenian and Slavic National
Revivals
Summary
Baron
Sigmund
(Žiga)
Zois
von Edelstein (1747—
1819) was the most
important Enlightenment-era patron and mentor of Slovenian poets, wri¬
ters, and scholars, and thus the first great leader of Slovenian cultural nati¬
onalism. Between
1780
and 1819, his mansion in Ljubljana was the meeting point
for the most prominent intellectuals in Carniola, including the poet and translator
Jurij Japelj,
philologist and educator
Blaž Kumerdej,
historian and playwright
Anton
Tomaž Linhart, poet
and philologist Valentin
Vodnik,
Slavic scholar Jernej
(Bartholomäus)
Kopitar,
philologist and poet Jakob Zupan, writer and theologian
Matevž Ravnikar,
historian and poet Janez Anton
Zupančič
and Slavic scholar
Franc
Metelko.
Under Zois guidance, these intellectuals designed the program
for the revival of Slovenian language and literature. The most important tasks of
Zois intellectual circle were the publication of a scholarly Slovenian grammar and
dictionary, the publication of the history of Slovenians, alphabet reform, and wri¬
ting and publishing useful books in pure Slovenian. These included publications
for general audiences (almanacs and translations of the Bible and handbooks) and
for intellectuals (poetry, comedies, and newspapers). Zois circle deliberately pro¬
moted the ideas, culture, and literature of the Enlightenment, modern analytical
philology, rational historiography, and the standardized language of Slovenian
Protestant writers of the sixteenth century. All of its activities focused on language
as the soul of national identity.
The book Zois Republic of Letters deals with the significance of Zois correspon¬
dence in early national revivals of Slovenians and Slavs. Because of severe gout,
the baron was for the most part confined to bed or a wheelchair in his mansion
and often unable to receive visitors. Consequently, letters became an important
337

bond in Zois circle, especially when some members left Ljubljana because of
their studies or jobs. Zois and
Vodnik,
for example, corresponded in
1794
and
1795,
when the poet was a parish priest in Koprivnik in Upper Carniola. Zois and
Kopitar
corresponded from
1808,
when the young scholar left Ljubljana, to 1819,
when the patron died. This work examines Zois letters related to Slavic national
revivals, particularly his correspondence with
Vodnik,
Baron
Jožef
Kalasanc
von
Erberg, and Janez
Nepomuk Primic,
and especially unpublished correspondence
with
Kopitar
(1810-1819). The first part of the book defines the position of Zois
correspondence within the history and the genre of the letter. The second part
examines its importance for Slavic national revivals.
Some formal and thematic elements of these letters originate in older epistolary
traditions. The first of them is ancient epistolography, to which Zois and his cor¬
respondents referred when they were writing in Latin and quoting famous Roman
writers (Horace and Virgil)
,
but particularly when they were citing letters by Cicero,
Horace, Seneca, and St. Paul. By far the most influential were Horace s Epistulae
(Letters), which were greatly admired by Zois,
Vodnik,
and
Kopitar.
The poetic
content and didactic character
oîEpistuîa
ad
Pisones
(Letter to
Piso;
also known as
Ars
poetica,
The Art of Poetry) decisively determined Zois poetic instructions in
letters to
Vodnik
(1794—1795),
whereas the philosophical Epistula ad Quincttum
(Letter to Quinctius) inspired the moralistic message of certain of Zois letters to
Kopitar
(1809).
The second epistolary tradition present in Zois correspondence,
especially in Kopitar s letters, is that of the humanistic Latin letter. It is recogniz¬
able in connection with the Latin language and scholarly content, as well as in par¬
ticular phrases (e.g., compliments). The third epistolary tradition is the baroque
aristocratic letter with an emphasized formal nature and gallant style. Above all, it
influenced letters that were conceived with a special regard to the high social posi¬
tion of the addressee (e.g., Zois correspondence with Baron Erberg and parts of
Kopitar s and Primic s letters), especially their careful outward appearance, elegant
allocution and conclusion, frequent use of epithets, complicated syntax, and avoid¬
ance of ordinary topics and banal expressions.
Irrespective of such richness of epistolary traditions, with the majority of its
features Zois correspondence belongs to the letters of the Enlightenment. These
characteristics include a more relaxed formal and thematic structure, abandonment
of classical rhetorical principles, writing with ease, and an atmosphere of familiarity.
Typical for the Enlightenment is also the intermediate position of these letters
between the private and public spheres. These texts were of course conceived of as
private letters. However, their authors continuously used them to express opinions
З38
Summary
on various social issues, and sometimes even to coordinate political enterprises. If the
letters turned out to be generally important, their addressees often circulated them
among the members of Zois salon and beyond. The new ideas were thus spread very
efficiently. Among the most evident signs of the Enlightenment in this correspon¬
dence are frequent mentions of empirical principles that were an indispensable part
of philosophical, religious, scholarly, and literary discussions. A final important fea¬
ture
ofthat
age is the culture of friendship. This epistolary topic was very important
to the members of Zois circle because it reduced the significance of social differ¬
ences and at the same time enhanced the feeling of affiliation to a common cause.
After an analysis of the historical character of Zois correspondence, it is pos¬
sible to determine its position within the epistolary genre. These texts are undoub¬
tedly private letters with real addressers, addressees, and content. There are only a
few traces of fictkiousness. This is especially because the authors did not anticipate
the publication of their letters and therefore did not change their usual manner
of writing. It is true that these letters were occasionally written and read aloud in
an expanded group of addressers and addressees (especially in Zois salon), but
such circumstances—quite common in the epistolary culture of the eighteenth cen¬
tury—did not entail the incorporation of
fictive
elements. Nonetheless, Zois cor¬
respondence does possess some elements of literariness, particularly in connection
with stylistic skill (e.g., inventive syntax, rhetorical figures, pseudonyms, and mul¬
tilingual structure), with refined content (e.g., sententiousness, humor, and irony),
and finally with fictitiousness: Kopitar s superb epistolary self-image.
For Zois circle, a letter was certainly not merely an auxiliary instrument, a sub¬
stitute for conversation during a time of separation. It was instead an equivalent
information channel that enabled, coordinated, and directed the Slovenian national
revival in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The first task of Zois
correspondence was to describe, define, and (as circumstances required) change the
concept of the revival. The main changes were introduced in
1809,
when
Kopitar,
who was in Vienna, started to connect Zois circle in Carniola systematically with
other centers and protagonists of Slovenian and Slavic national revivals. At that
time
Kopitar
resolutely took over the coordination of Slovenian and foreign Slavic
scholars, and the aged and tired Zois remained the doyen and leader of the revival
in Carniola. Another important function of Zois correspondence was organizing
work. Letters not only distributed tasks and supervised their realization, but also
ranked coworkers. The main generator of these inner politics was of course Zois,
assisted initially by
Linhart
and later by
Kopitar.
Especially after 1810, when he had
attained financial and personal independence,
Kopitar
exerted increasing influence
339

on Zois. By means of frequent letters to his patron he energetically directed the
Carniolan regenerators
Vodnik, Župan,
Ravnikar,
Metelko, Zupančič,
Erberg,
and
Primic. Sometimes Zois and
Kopitar
mutually even planned extreme measures,
such as disciplining disobedient collaborators
(Vodnik),
secretly reading their let¬
ters (Ravnikar and Zupan), and obstructing their promotion (Primic).
Zois correspondence naturally encouraged and assured completion of numerous
literary and philological plans. It guided Vodnik s writing with poetics (Horace,
Boileau, and Batteux), with examples (Horace, The Poems qfOssian, and Blumauer),
and with stylistic, linguistic, and metrical instructions. It coordinated the members
of Zois circle when they were preparing the most important editions together;
namely, two volumes of Vodnik s
Velika
prattka (Large Almanac,
1795-1796)
and Kopitar s
Grammatik der Slawischen Sprache in
Krain,
Kärnten
und Steiermark
(Grammar of the Slavic Language in Carniola, Carinthia, and
Styria, 1808-1809).
In
1809
and 1810 the letters discussed the possibility of a French or Italian edition
of Kopitar s grammar, and in
1813
they dealt with the title of Vodnik s Slovenian
dictionary; however neither of these two works was ever printed.
These letters not only accelerated the writing and publication of new books; they
also developed a historical and ideological foundation for the Slovenian national
revival. Zois letters constantly encouraged
Kopitar
to complete and to prove the
Carinthian theory, the beginnings of which were shaped by
Linhart
in
Versuch einer
Geschichte von
Krain
(An
Attempt at a History of Carniola,
1788-1791)
and by the
baron himself.
Kopitar
adopted their assumption about ancient Slavic settlement
in Carinthia and augmented it with a hypothesis about the
Pannonian
origin of Old
Church Slavic. He deliberately built this historical conception that emphasized the
antiquity and significance of the Slovenian language into his Austro-Slavic polit¬
ical suggestions (establishment of South Slavic Illyrian kingdom with the capital
city in Ljubljana) and cultural plans (adapting the Shtokavian dialect to Slovenian
and the Kajkavian dialect to Serbian). It seems that Zois and
Kopitar
used the same
historical arguments for Slovenian leadership in the projected reform of the Slavic
Latin alphabet. In Kopitar s judgment, the new alphabet would become a common
basis for the harmonious development of Slavic languages, literatures, and cul¬
tures, supervised by centers in Vienna and Ljubljana. Zois letters persistently but
unsuccessfijlly urged
Kopitar
to solve this problem daringly, by adopting Cyrillic
letters for certain Slavic phonemes.
The propagation of the Carinthian and
Pannonian
theories and promotion
of the Slavic Latin alphabet reform gave Zois correspondence an international
Summary
dimension. However these letters were even more important to the Slavic world.
After
1808,
Kopitar
and Zois mutually planned and established the transnational
epistolary network ofEuropean Slavic scholars. Zois decisively supported
Kopitar
s
organization with his connections, money, and donations of books. Their network
with centers in Vienna and Ljubljana enabled the first permanent communication
between the Slavic north and Slavic south, and efficiently connected the Slovenian,
Czech (Josef Valentin
Zlobický
and Josef
Dobrovský),
Polish
(Józef Maksymilian
Ossoliński),
Dalmatian (Francesco Maria Appendini), Croatian (Maksimilijan
Vrhovac), and Serbian national revivals (Dositej
Obradović,
Pavle
Sobrie,
and
Vuk
Stefanović
Karadžič).
This web, as
Kopitar
termed it, not only made possible the
rapid exchange of new ideas and books, but supported and directed the literary
projects of all the Slavic nations in the Austrian empire. Correspondence between
Zois and
Kopitar
was thus of crucial importance for the coordinated development
of Slavic cultural nationalisms and for cosmopolitan dissemination of their ideas.
Therefore it is not surprising that this correspondence also became a means for
achievement of political ends. In their letters, Zois and
Kopitar
carefully conceived
proposals for the political regulation of South Slavic lands. They then proposed
them together with
Vodnik
to French and Austrian statesmen: to the governor of
the IUyrian provinces
Auguste
de Marmont,
to the court commissar of the Illyrian
lands Franz Joseph
von Saurau,
and finally to the Austrian foreign minister Prince
Klemens
von Metternich.
Thus Zois and
Vodnik
in
1810
prevented the introduc¬
tion of Serbo-Croatian into Carniolan schools and secured the independent devel¬
opment of Slovenian. Moreover, in 1814 and 1816 Zois and
Kopitar
supported the
establishment of an Illyrian kingdom as a South Slavic state under the Austrian
crown with Ljubljana as its capital.
