IDENTITY, TRADITION AND RESEARCH
Vojvodovo:
Identity, Tradition and Research is the fifth monograph dedi¬
cated to the village of
Vojvodovo.
Five books? How are they different?
Leaving aside the thematic and methodological differences, i.e. the diver¬
sity in their approaches to the issue
-
the Czech village in Bulgaria,
Vojvo¬
dovo
-
and if we ignore the diversity of the areas described of the history
of the village and its inhabitants, then the publications differ primarily in
the fact that each following one builds on the previous one, surpasses it
and pushes the boundaries of our knowledge, in many respects, a little fur¬
ther than where its predecessors were at the time of their publications.
What's new in this publication for you? The very title of the book, in
general, anticipates it to a great extent. Specifically, in this book the reader
will find a chapter (opening the whole work) which is devoted to the ques¬
tion of why
Vojvodovo
is called
Vojvodovo
(see chapter "How
Vojvodovo
got its name"). Here the reader not only learns the answer to this ques¬
tion, but also learns that, actually,
Vojvodovo
is, just thanks to its name,
connected with one of the most memorable chapters of the Bulgarian na¬
tional struggle for liberation. The following chapter is named
"'Vojvodovo
congregation is the largest in the entire mission'.
Vojvodovo
in the context
of the Methodist movement" (the co-author of the chapter is
Lenka
J. Budilová)
presents
Vojvodovo
in the so far neglected perspective as
a "shop window" of the Methodist Mission in Bulgaria. Part of this chap¬
ter is a historically tuned explanation situating
Vojvodovo
in the context
of the Methodist or
protestant
missions in the Balkans. Another part is an
annotated edition of protocols of the annual conferences of the Methodist
Church and the translation of selected relevant historical materials. The
chapter
"Penčev's
folklore materials from the village of
Vojvodovo"
intro¬
duces the reader to research activities of Vladimir
Penčev
in
Vojvodovo.
He is the author who, in the

980s, "discovered"
Vojvodovo
as a research
topic. All current research on
Vojvodovo
is built on his work. Part of this
chapter is also the Czech translation of a set of recordings of conversations
that
V. Penčev
led in
Vojvodovo
with his informants
-
eyewitnesses of the
"Czech era" in
Vojvodovo
-
during his first investigations in the village.
These interviews are (in terms
ofinformation)
an extremely rich reservoir
containing knowledge of many areas of
Vojvodovo
history. The fourth
chapter is devoted to texts by
Vojvodovo
natives and their descendants
in relation to the formulation and preservation of their distinct identity

Czechs"). Its main purpose is to demon¬
strate that, a number of years ago, the doubts raised about the existence
of memoir production by
Vojvodovo
Czechs, hence the very existence of
the community, were unfounded. In addition to the annotated overview of
Vojvodovo
memoirs, the chapter is, in the form of an example, completed
with two so far not very known commemorative texts by
Vojvodovo
eye¬
witnesses B.
Čížková
and
L. Fabouková,
and a memoir by
A. Svobodová.
The following chapter with the clear title "About
Vojvodovo
Bulgarians",
reminds readers that although
Vojvodovo
was a Czech village in the years
1900-1950,
it was inhabited by other ethnic or confessional groups, too.
Of these, only little attention has so far been devoted to the local Bulgar¬
ians, despite the fact that the Bulgarians were the second largest group of
locals for more than half
ofthat
period. Apart from the relations between
Vojvodovo
Czechs and Bulgarians, the chapter also covers a remarkable
moment of the post-Czech history of the village, when, after the change
of regime in the
1990s,
local Bulgarians, so to speak, seized the religious
legacy of their former neighbours and supported the revitalization of
the local Methodist church. The sixth chapter,
"Vojvodovo
of
Bogdan
Nikolov", is dedicated to the person, research and work of B. Nikolov. This
Bulgarian explorer, whose professional interest centered on the Vraca re¬
gion (in which
Vojvodovo
is also located), was probably the first person
who, following the departure of the local Czech community, visited
Vo¬
jvodovo
during his research and gave his knowledge written form in the
study
"Vojvodovo",
whose annotated translation the chapter also includes.
The final chapter of the book includes two texts:
"Vojvodovo
in the heart"
(with
a postscripť'End
of
Vojvodovo
as a paradise on Earth?") by
Bořivoj
Kńourek,
and "Who has the right to write about
Vojvodovo
(and how)?"
by the author of this publication. In addition to describing the relationship
of a descendant of (ex) Vojvodovans to the
Vojvodovo
issue about which
Kňourek
informs us in the introduction to his text, these texts are devoted
to, among other things, a discussion about the issues accompanying
Vo¬
jvodovo
explorations and the publication of their results.
In the Attachments, you find annotated translations of four documents
linked to
