1945 - 1948 - 1989
In February
1948,
the decisive power struggle between the forces of democracy and
totalitarianism took place in Czechoslovakia. Communists took advantage of the govern¬
ment crisis that emerged on 20th February after the demission of ministers from three
noncommunist parties and established their monopoly of power. Although the solution
for the government crisis was reached within the framework of parliamentary procedu¬
res, the coup itself was a result of unconstitutional measures. International and domes¬
tic situation had been favorable for the Communists even before the decisive power
struggle. There was no efficient resistance to the Communist push during February
1948
and a large segment of the population gave it its support, either because of their beliefs
or because of their fears. After the February Coup the period of communist dictatorship
started and Czechoslovakia (and Slovakia) became the member of the Soviet bloc defi¬
nitively.

and
1989
represent milestones of the Communist era which form a closed cycle
of the communist experiment
—
its emergence, development and collapse. There were
several constant characteristics of the Communist regime which defined its essence,
including dictatorship, power monopoly for the ruling party and its
transmissive
bodies,
strong role of state in economy and in society, system of economic planning, and the
Marxist-Leninist ideology. As every other political system it went through several chan¬
ges as well: sources of its social support had been changing, there had been modifications
to the doctrines of the Marxist-Leninist ideology, and its politics had been more flexible
then the system itself The system was born during the peak era of Stalinism; it survived
the ice-age during
1948 - 1953;
a mild thaw of
1956;
warming, crisis and the reform
attempt of the
1960s;
Neo-Stalinism during the normalization period after
1968;
and
finally collapsed at the end of
1989.
The time period from
1948
till
1989
is covered in
four thematic blocs of the monograph which had been written and published during the
last
15
years.
The first bloc has a title Power Monopoly of the Communist Party . It is focused
on political movement which took control of the state after the Coup from February
1948,
commanded society and thrust its will upon its citizens. Although there was no
totalitarian Communist regime during
1945 - 1948
yet, the Communist Party was one of
the ruling parties and influenced the political direction the state was moving in heavily.
The author therefore considers as adequate and necessary to include this time period in
this monograph. After the Coup from February
1948,
the party established its power
monopoly in Czechoslovakia which lasted till the collapse of the Communist regime in
late
1989.
The second bloc with the title Under the Control of State Security Service is dea¬
ling with the activities of one of the pillars of the Communist regime

Service which served mainly as a political police. During the first years of the Commu¬
nist regime its main goal was to produce political show trials (with the influence of
Soviet advisers), later it served primarily as an instrument for control and surveillance of
society. Individual chapters describe specific cases when the service was used against the
regime enemies and its activities during the period of the reform attempt in the
1960s
including its liquidation.
The third bloc Communist Power and Churches is focused on relationships that
defined the approach of the Communist regime to individual churches. Relations with
the Catholic Church played the most significant role because this most influential church
had the highest number of believers (and the problem included finding correct attitude
towards Vatican as its world-wide centre). However, interventions to the activities of the
Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession which had the second highest number
of believers played a significant role too. Churches represented a serious opponent of the
Communist regime, particularly in the struggle for people s minds.
The fourth bloc The Most Brutal Period of the Communist Regime
- 1948 -1953
is defined by typical forms and displays of persecutions that were used by the Commu¬
nist Party and the bodies under its control to spread the atmosphere of fear, concern and
uncertainty among the citizens. Those practices involved purges that followed immedia¬
tely after the Coup from February
1948,
political and politically motivated show trials,
expulsion of undesirable individuals from major cities, interventions against churches
and various forms of other repressions. The author is convinced that thanks to its content,
this monograph offers a vivid picture of the entire period of the Communist regime in
Slovakia.
