SUMMARY
The question of chancery notes on papal documents is a part of an im¬
portant and highly specialized field of study of papal diplomatics. It had been
constituted as a more or less separate discipline of auxiliary sciences of history
already in the late 19th century, however a deeper interest in the specialized stu¬
dy of chancery notes on papal documents appears only in connection with the
project Censimento at the beginning of the second half of the 20th century.
Chancery notes represent a specific and unique imprint of the develop¬
ment of procedural mechanisms of issuing papal documents and they serve as
an important source for the study of the history of
curial
authorities that had
the power to issue apostolic lists and of their clerical staff. The chancery notes
can also help in solving various prosopographical and historical-topographical
issues.
This work is based on the study and comparison of originals of the papal
documents from the period between the years
1378—1417,
which are now kept
in the archives in Moravia and Czech Silesia. Altogether, we have collected and
processed
59
documents of the popes of the Roman and the
Pisan
obedience
from the period of the schism and two documents of the Council of Constance.
Analysis of the chancery notes on these documents and their comparison with
the data published by the project Censimento showed, or rather confirmed,
some phenomena, changes and trends in issuing papal documents at the time
of the schism. The development in the
curial
offices of the Avignon popes could
not be observed due to the understandable absence of these documents in the
monitored archives.
At the time of the schism, three ways of issuing had been constituted in the
Roman and the
Pisan
obedience: per
cancelariam,
per cameram and per
viam
correctoris. The differences between the ways of issuing are reflected in the dif¬
ferent locations of chancery notes, which have been usually set for each parti¬
cular route. In the period under review, the chancery notes and signs appear in
a total of

positions that are for greater clarity illustrated in the supplement.
Chancery notes on papal documents can be divided into two large groups:
procedural issuing and informative issuing notes. The formation of the first

was conditioned by the process of issuing and they have a character of a stab¬
le, and therefore in terms of the chancery procedure mandatory, record. Their
location depends not only on the type of issuing, but also on the specific cir¬
cumstances that surrounded the issue of papal documents. This group includes
the signature of the scribes and notes showing the circumstances of writing the
document, i.e. the marks of vice-chancellor and his representative, signs of au-
dientiae, complete or incomplete taxation notes, taxation notes of the bullarium,
signatures or marks of secretaries, marks or signatures of abbreviators according
to the role they fulfilled in issuing the documents (cancellariam
tenere, prima
visio,
checking the litterarum rescribendarum etc.), signatures and notes of pro¬
secutors, registrars signs. The second group of notes contains mostly persona¬
lized information about some stage of the issuing or its specific circumstances.
This type of notes is irregular and a clear conditionality in relation to individual
issuing steps cannot be traced.
All papal documents contain scribal signature, which is sometimes supple¬
mented by various explanatory notes, e.g. about the scribe s proxy, about the
need to rewrite the act, etc. Let us mention the notes and their location, cha¬
racteristic for each type of issuing.
It is typical for the papal documents issued by the papal office (per cancella¬
riam) that there appears an elongated line in the upper left corner of the front
page of the document, which most likely represents the letter
„1
meaning lecta,
and a personal
signum
of vice-chancellor or his representative in the upper right
corner in the form of the initial of his first name. Vice-chanceUor or his repre¬
sentative would give a permission to release the document from the office to the
bullarium. The taxation signs were situated to the left side under the plica, and
a trend had developed in the office of Urban VI that the value of the sign and the
name of the
taxatores
were also accompanied by the month of taxation. Reversed
signatures of the abbreviators regularly appear at the bottom of the reverse side
of the documents
[prima visio
and
cancelariam
tenere).
Those are however usually
not found in the transcribed documents (litterae rescriptae); signature of the ab-
breviator who checked the transcribed document is usually located in the lower
right corner. Note of the proctor (i.e., regarding the period under review, his sig¬
nature) appears at the top in the middle of the dorsal side only intermittently. If
the act
(de iustitia)
was read in audientia, this fact was recorded by a specific sign,
usually situated below the
signum
of the vice-chancellor.

Those papal documents which fall within the competence of the secreta¬
ry
{expedirlo
per cameram) always contain the signature of the papal secretary
to the right under the plica, while the
signum
of the vice-chancellor cannot be
found in the corners of the front side of the document. Among the documents
issued per cameram were litterae
de
curia issued at the initiative of the Pope and
the documents that bear the note gratis
de mandato
domini
nostri pape
above the
name of the scribe, but these come up only during the pontificate of Boniface
IX and they of course did not contain a tax mark in this case. In the other do¬
cuments that were issued this way, the taxation note is placed to the left under
the plica; the so-called summarium is usually situated at the right edge of the
reverse side
—
a shortened content of the document, often formulated in one
word. Proctors signatures occur only very rarely on the documents sent per ca-
meram, while the registration sign appears on a regular basis.
The only way to obtain simple honorary and judicial rescripts was sending
them per
viam correctoris.
The administrative ease of issuing documents of this
type is reflected in a relatively smaller number of notes. If the court rescript
was read in audientia
publica
,
or also audientia litterarum contradictarum^ the re¬
spective sign was usually written in the upper right corner or in the right up¬
per part of the front side. It is typically often difficult in these litterae simplices
to read the protonotary note in the upper left corner of the reverse side. Un¬
like the previous methods of sending, the name of the
curial
proctor is regularly
written at the top center of the dorsal side of the document. In the upper right
corner, there appears a name, probably of the abbreviator, whose significance,
or rather his task in issuing per
viam
correctoris has not been fully explained yet.
If a rescript was rewritten, which is stated in a note placed above the name of
the scribe, all comments on the dorsal side are usually missing. The signature of
the corrector does not appear in these simple rescripts from the period of the
schism in the Roman and
Pisan
obedience and it seems that it was not neces¬
sary in these simple, fully formalized cases. The only exception in our material
is the signature of the corrector on
a consistorial
provision, which was traditio¬
nally
sentar viam
correctoris. The rescripts and most of the acts issued this way
went through taxation, and the relevant note is situated in a traditional place,
to the left under the plica.
The listed typical notes can serve as primary distinguishing features for
classification of a papal document within a certain issuing process. Other notes,

be it procedural issuing or informative complete the picture of the mechanism
for creating a papal document in
curial
offices of Roman or
Pisan
popes at the
time of the schism.
Out of the
61
surviving original papal documents, ten were issued under
the name of the Roman Pope Urban VI and all ten were sent per cancellariam.
From the acts of his successor to the Roman papal throne, Boniface IX, there
were

original pieces preserved in the mentioned archives, of which
18
were
sent by the office,

pieces, judging by the notes, correspond with sending per
cameram and only one piece belongs to a group of rescripts sent per
viam correc-
toris. After the death of Boniface IX, Innocent
VII
ascended the Roman papal
throne and in his case, our materials contain only a single original honorary act
that was sent per cancellariam. The last pope from the time of the schism, who¬
se seven original documents are in our material, is the controversial
Pisan Pope
John
XXIII.
Of his seven documents, one was issued per cancellariam, one per
cameram, and five rescripts per
viam correctoris.
This overview confirms the three
différent
ways of issuing papal documents in the period under review. Obvious
is also the change of issuing per cameram in the time of Boniface IX. Papal se¬
cretaries, who were originally responsible for issuing all documents
de
curia (lit-
terae
patentes, litterae
clausae, brevia), enjoyed an expanded scope of power by the
turn of the 14th century and they issued also other types of documents that pre¬
viously fell within the sole competence of the papal office. More than half

of the original surviving documents of Boniface IX were issued per cameram,
while these were generally honorary acts, issued at the request of an petitioner.
Letters issued per
viam
correctoris are represented relatively scarcely in our ma¬
terial, which is not surprising considering the legal nature of the documents is¬
sued this way. They were delegation mandates, which after the execution of the
order lost their validity and were generally used for other purposes. Neverthe¬
less, it can be assumed that the delegation rescripts and other documents issued
per
viam
correctoris were not uncommon in the Czech lands.
The aim of our study was, through
regesta
of a small set of original papal
documents, not only to supplement or correct discrepancies of the previous edi¬
tions, but also to try to outline the importance of chancery notes and signs as
much as we were allowed by the Moravian originals of the papal documents,
by the referential material and by the available literature on the topic.
