This book explores the relationship between space and economy, the spatial expressions of the knowledge
economy. The capitalist industrial economy produced its own space, which differed radically from its
predecessor agrarian and mercantile economies. If a new knowledge-based economy is emerging, it is similarly
expected to produce its own space to suit the new circumstances of production and consumption. If these
spatial expressions do exist, even if in incomplete and partial forms, they are likely to be the mode! for the
future of cities.
The book first searches for some basic definitions, asking whether knowledge economy is a reality, dream
or mere rhetoric, and looking for the theoretical relationships between society, economy and space.This is
followed by an investigation into the changing nature of products, the emergence of knowledge as a productive
capacity, the role of information and communication technology, the social organization of work and the new
global division of labour It then moves on to the sices of production and consumption in cities, where new
clusters of activity are formed while others shatter and disperse, creating new places of innovation and new
patterns of differentiation and stratification. It zooms in on the new spaces of knowledge, such as universities,
science parks and cultural quarters, which are created side by side with the new spaces of consumption and
new patterns of social inequality.
The book
argues
against some of the widely circulated misconceptions about knowledge economy: its
immateriality and aspatialrty, the determinism that comes with a hscination for new technologies; the idea of a
post-industrial economy; the limited way knowledge is interpreted and used; the multiple and overlapping roles
of science and culture; and the rise of a new social class. It offers fresh insights into the contemporary city for
students and scholars who are interested in the relationship between society and space.
